A Psalm of David with Commentaries by Dennis
Edwards
28:1 Unto You will I
cry, O Lord my rock; be not
silent to me: lest, if You be silent to me, I
become like them that go down into the pit.
Again, we see today, that it’s in hearing God’s voice, and knowing
that He is with us, that gives us strength to carry on, and differentiates us
from the living dead.
Psalm 28:2 Hear the
voice of my supplications, when I cry unto You, when I
lift up my hands toward Your holy oracle.
David is crying out desperately to God for answers, which is the
formular for being heard. In Jeremiah we read,
Jeremiah 29:33 “You shall seek Me, and find
Me, when you shall search for Me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 33:3 “Call unto Me, and I will
answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you know not.”
Psalm 28:3 Draw me
not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace
to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts.
Elsewhere in the psalms, David notes the lying tongue of the
wicked.
Psalm 55:21 “The words of his mouth were
smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil,
yet were they drawn swords.”
In the prophecy of Daniel of the last days, we see two leaders at
a peace conference with mischief in their hearts.
Daniel 11:27-28b “And both these kings’
hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it
shall not prosper; for yet the end shall be at a time appointed… and his (the
Antichrist’s) heart shall be against the holy covenant.”
How often in political matters do we see leaders of opposing views
sit at one table speaking lies. They pretend to make peace accords, which they
know they will not uphold, while shaking hands for the cameras.
Psalm 29:4 Give them
according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours:
give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.
David is praying according to God’s will. God has said, we shall
reap, what we have sown, Galatians 6:7. In Apostle John’s epistle we
read,
1 John 5:14-15 “And this is the confidence
that we have in Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears
us: and if we know that He hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have
the petitions that we desired of Him.”
When we align our prayers with God’s will and not according to our
selfish desires, we have the confidence that God will hear us. Be careful what
you pray for. If you insist on something, God might just give it to you as he
did to the children of Israel in the dessert. “He gave them their request, but
sent leanness into their souls,” Psalm 106:15 which took place in Numbers
11.
Psalm 28:5 Because
they regard not the works of the Lord, nor
the operation of His hands, He shall destroy them, and
not build them up.
Mankind is without excuse. Like Apostle Paul has written,
Romans 1:18-20 “For the
wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who hold (or suppress) the
truth in unrighteousness; Because
that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it
unto them. For the invisible things of Him from
the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that
are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”
The unbelievers suppress the truth of God which is revealed in
nature. As David has written elsewhere, “The heavens declare the glory of God
and the firmament shows His handiwork,” Psalm 19:1. Man is without good
reasons for not believing. If he will only look honestly at the evidence, he
will find God. Job makes the same argument.
Job 12:7-10 NIV “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has
done this? In his
hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.”
Romans 1:21-25 “Because
that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not
as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their
foolish heart was darkened. Professing
themselves to be wise, they became fools, and
changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to
corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed
beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore, God
also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to
dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who
changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature
more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
The unbeliever has let bitterness and unthankfulness enter his
heart. He is mad at God for some reason. As a result of not keeping God as the
first principle of his thinking, his thought process has become corrupted.
Instead of, “In the beginning God,” we have, “In the beginning nothing.” Out of
nothing everything has evolved through a non-directed naturalistic process, a
random process. The unbeliever ends up worshipping nature more than the Creator.
His mind becomes corrupted because he has rejected God as the first premise of his
thinking. Professing himself to be wise, he has, in fact, become a fool. As David
has written, also, “The fool has said in his heart, There is no God,” Psalm
14:1.
Psalm 28:6 Blessed
be the Lord, because He has heard
the voice of my supplications.
David has prayed according to God’s will against the influence of the
ungodly wicked who often dominate culture. He knows God has heard his prayer
and will answer. As we read in the proverb:
Proverbs 15:29 “The Lord is far from the
wicked: but He hears the prayer of the righteous.”
Psalm 28:7 The Lord is my strength and
my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and
I am helped: therefore, my heart greatly rejoices; and
with my song will I praise him.
A beautiful verse to put to memory. Apostle Paul tells us to, “Rejoice
in the Lord always: and again, I say, Rejoice!” Philippians 4:4. We can
rejoice and be thankful because we have the Lord as our strength and shield,
because we have trusted in Him.
Psalm 28:8 The Lord is their strength,
and He is the saving strength of His
anointed.
Some trust in horses, and some trust in chariots, but we will
trust in the name of the Lord our God, Psalm 20:7. “The name of the Lord
is a strong tower: the righteous runs into it and is safe,” Proverbs 18:10.
Psalm 28:9 Save Your people,
and bless Your inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.
He has saved us with His saving grace to all that believe. Believe
on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, and your house (family), Acts
16:31. “And if you be Christ’s, then are you Abraham’s seed, and heirs
according to the promise,” Galatians 3:29.
