PETE SEEGER Guantanamera

Guantanamera:
This song has some kind of magic to it. It's always captured me, even though I didn't understand its words. I guess it’s saying that there is something beautiful about the poor and downtrodden masses of the earth and we identify with their plight and their plea for release, for comfort, for justice, for salvation. Even though "Liberation Theology" has been very popular in South America because it acknowledges the grave injustices committed within the present capitalistic system, is it the solution? Just bringing in revolution and removing the corrupt leaders by whatever means possible only ends up with a new rich leadership class. The poor, though initially, elated in the end are often no better off than they were before. And now, their new leaders even take their "God" away from them and they have no solace, no comforter. Man's inhumanity to man continues.

Paul the Apostle tells us, "For the whole creation groans and travails in pain until now" waiting to be delivered. Even the creation itself is groaning like the oppressed poor of the world, and like many of us normal everyday people, groaning to be delivered from this present system and its injustice, pain, sorrow and corruption. But the history of mankind only demonstrates man's inability to govern righteously. Only the supernatural intervention of God himself will every bring peace on earth. And that is what the Bible tells us. But before that beautiful day of love and laughter and peace ever after comes, mankind will enter into its darkest hours, called by the prophets "the Great and Terrible day of the Lord. "Jesus himself named it the "Great Tribulation." He said unless God shortened its days mankind would end up destroying itself and his environment.

During WW2 Vera Lynn sang a beautiful heartwarming song about man's longing for peace. Men when off to war with the hope their sacrifice would make the world a better and safer place. Vera sang, and I'm sure you remember it, "There'll be blue birds over, the white cliffs of Dover, tomorrow when the world is free. There'll be love and laughter and peace ever after, tomorrow when the world is free." Lord Jesus, deliver us from man's inhumanity to man. Deliver us from our own evil devices. Give us compassion, give us humility. Help us communicate your love to each and every person in our circle of life. May your love shine through us and touch other lonely souls searching for they know not what, but, in fact, they’re searching for You. May our sample and words lead them to You. In Jesus' name we prayer. Amen
