Psalm 27 King James Version Commentary by Dennis Edwards
27:1 The Lord is
my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be
afraid?
Jesus is the light of the world.
He that follows Jesus shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of
life, John 8:12. Only in Him is there light. He is the true light that
enlightens everyone that comes into the world, John 1:9. In Him is light
and there is no shadow of darkness, 1 John 1:5. If we walk in
the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the
blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin, 1 John 1:8. He is the Saviour
of the world. There is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we
must be saved, Acts 4:12. If we are on God’s side, who can be against
us? Romans 8:31.
In ourselves and our own
strength, we are weak. But in Him, we can do all things. He is the saving strength
of His elect. Without Him we can do nothing. But with Him all things are
possible to those that believe, and nothing is impossible. The Lord is our
strong tower. We run unto Him and we are safe, and strengthened, and secure. We
will not fear what flesh can do unto us.
Psalm 27:2-3 When the wicked, even my enemies and my foes, came
upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though a host should encamp
against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this
will I be confident.
We can be confident, no matter
what is happening, that God is with us and is taking care of us. Our enemies
will not triumph over us. Even in death, He is with us and will deliver us and
give unto us everlasting life. We shall not fear, but we shall trust in Him.
Psalm 27:4 One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may
dwell in the house of the Lord all
the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple.
The Lord must be the one thing
above all that we desire. Otherwise, we are worshipping false gods that can not
save us. Our God is a jealous God and will have no other gods before Him. If we
want His blessing, His anointing on our lives, we must spend time with Him.
Seek first God and His kingdom, then all these other things will be added unto
you. If we spend time with Him daily, entering into His gates with thanksgiving
and praise, we will behold His beauty, His love, His everlasting care. If we
abide in Him, He will abide in us, and all will be well.
Psalm 27:5 For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His
pavilion: in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me up
upon a rock.
Because we have made the Lord
our habitation, we can face what ever evil may befall us. He is our rock. By
living in obedience to His word and His voice, we have built the house of our
lives upon the solid rock foundation, which is Christ Jesus. The storms of life
may beat upon our house, but it will remain strong, because it is founded on
obedience to God and His word. The Rock which the builders forsook, have we
taken, and have found it to be solid and sure, an everlasting cornerstone,
perfect, in every sense.
Psalm 27:6 And now shall my head be lifted up above my enemies
round about me: therefore, will I offer in His tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I
will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.
When the dust of life finally
settles, God has promised that He will lift us up above those that ridiculed us,
those that slandered us. The sacrifice He wants us to offer is one of
rejoicing, of joy. It is the joy and happiness of the Lord in our lives, that
gives us strength for the battles we face. As we sing and praise God we are
strengthened.
Psalm 27:7-8 Hear, O Lord,
when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me. When You said,
Seek My face; my heart said unto You, Your face, Lord, will I seek.
Lord, we seek Your face. Shine
the light of Your countenance upon us, that we may know they way wherein You
would have us to walk.
Psalm 27:9 Hide not Your face far from me; put not Your
servant away in anger: You have been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me,
O God of my salvation.
Lord, forgive us for our
waywardness. Help us to follow You more closely, to follow You more nearly, more
dearly, day by day.
Psalm 27:10-11 When my father and my mother forsake me, then
the Lord will take me
up. Teach me Your way, O Lord,
and lead me in a plain path, because of my enemies.
We need the way to be plain,
Lord, as there are so many voices saying; this is the way, walk therein. Lord,
be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Make plain the way, wherein,
You want us to walk. Guide us with Your eye.
Psalm 27:12-14 Deliver me not over unto the will of my enemies:
for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty. I
had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait
on the Lord: be of good
courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.
Lord, we wait upon You. “Even
the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fail: but
those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up
with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and
not faint,” Isaiah 40:30-31. Help us to lift up our hands and heads, to
straighten up our shoulders that are cast down. Make straight paths for our
feet, Lord, that we may be healed and encouraged, and strengthened. Give power
to those that are faint, and to them that have no might increase their strength.
Our strength is in You alone,
Lord. Send help from Your sanctuary that Your Presence may go with us. You
said, as our days, so would be our strength. Send us Your strength as we abide
in You. We lean not to our own understanding, but we acknowledge You in all our
ways. Direct our paths, Lord. Let us hear Your voice, that we may know the way,
wherein, we should walk. We look to You. Rescue us. Be a father to Your
children. Unto You do we seek. You are our God.
Prayer: Lord, for the joy that
was set before You, You endured the shame and humiliation. You endured the
suffering and the scorn of men. Help us keep our eyes on You and not on the
waves and winds that so easily upset us. Help us not to faint in our minds. Help us not
to be weary in well doing, for we will reap in due season, if we don't give up. Help us to wait upon
You, Lord; and in our waiting to be strengthened, renewed, and reinvigorated. In Jesus’
name, we pray. Amen.
