A Prayer of Vindication
Psalm 7 King James Version A Prayer of Vindication Commentary by Dennis Edwards
7:1 O Lord my God, in You do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me:
The psalmist starts off by
declaring his trust in the Lord during times of persecution. In Psalm 34:19
we read, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivers him
out of them all.” Apostle Paul tells us, “Yea, and all that will Godly in
Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution,” 2 Timothy 3:12. In Colossians, he
encourages us that God “has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has
translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son,” Colossians 1:13. Jesus
told us that we should not fear them which can kill the body, but are not able
to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both body and
soul into hell,” Matthew 10:28. He said, “These things have I spoken
unto you, that in Me you might have peace. In the world you shall have
tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world,” John 16:33.
Psalm 7:2 Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in
pieces, while there is none to deliver.
Apostle Peter warns us to be
sober and vigilant, because it is the devil that goes about as a roaring lion
seeking whom he may devour, whom we must resist steadfast in the faith, 1
Peter 5:8-9. Apostle Pauls tells us to, “Put on the whole armour of God,
that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil,” Ephesians 6:11.
He then goes to describe the armour: “Stand therefore, having your loins girt
about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet
shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield
of faith, wherewith you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the
wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God,” Ephesian 6:13-17.
Psalm 7:3-4 O Lord my
God, If I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; If I have rewarded
evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, (if) I have delivered him that
without cause is my enemy):
David tells the Lord, that if he
is really guilty of evil, in that he has condemned the innocent, let him, therefore,
be punished like the wicked.
Psalm 7:5 Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea,
let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust.
Selah.
David is saying, If I am guilty,
Lord, condemn me.
Psalm 7:6 Arise, O Lord,
in Your anger, lift up Yourself because of the rage of my enemies: and awake
for me to the judgment that You have commanded.
In times of persecution, the
righteous plead with God to rise up in their defence. God will judge those who
persecute the righteous. During the time of the future great tribulation, God
first sets a mark or seal on those that are His. “Hurt not the earth, neither
the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their
foreheads,” Revelation 7:3. He then reins down tribulation on the wicked
and the unbelievers. Ezekiel 9:1-7 has similar imagery where an angel goes
forth and designates with a mark who shall live during the judgment on
Jerusalem. God would supernaturally protect those who were not guilty of the
sins of the nation and had refused to participate in iniquity. The other angels
go forth and guide the hands of the Babylonian soldiers as they kill those who
participated in evil, and leave those with the mark untouched.
Psalm 7:7 So shall the congregation of the people compass You
about: for their sakes therefore, return You (from) on high.
When the peoples or nations see
the wicked punished, many will come to faith. After a major natural or man-made
catastrophe, people are usually more sensitive to God. They may have survived,
while others died. They realise it was God’s mercy and are therefore more open
to Him. When Jesus comes back in the clouds many of the unrepented will repent,
and come to faith.
Recently we went to an area of
Spain where flooding had destroyed various small towns and many were killed.
When talking to a director of an association which a leading communist had
directed us to, we were being careful about how we talked about God, not
wanting to offend a man we assumed was an unbeliever. My wife said, “We believe
in God, but we are not affiliated with any denomination.” The director
responded, “We, also believe, however you want to call Him. We were here when
the canal overflowed. We were here in the darkness and heard the screams for
help. My wife and two children were with me. We believe. We know that it is by God’s
mercy that we are here today.” The tragedy had brought him to faith.
Matthew 24:29-30 Immediately after the tribulation of those days…the
powers of the heavens shall be shaken. And then shall appear the sign of the
Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and
they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and
great glory.
After the tribulation, at the
time of the rapture, it seems a great repentance will take place in Jerusalem
and around the world, and many will believe.
Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon
the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and
they shall look upon Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him,
as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that
is in bitterness for his first born.
Revelation 1:7 Behold, He comes with clouds; and every eye shall
see Him, and they also which pierced Him: and all kindreds of the earth shall
wail because of Him.
Some will be wailing in
repentance, while others will still be in anger at God.
Revelation 16:21 And men blasphemed God because of the plague of
the hail; for the plague was exceeding great.
Psalm 7:8 The Lord shall
judge the people: judge me, O Lord,
according to my righteousness, and according to my integrity that is in me.
We that believe have put on the
righteousness which is of Christ. We are clothed with His righteousness, not
our own. God will chastise us for our sins, for judgment must begin first at
the house of God. And if the righteous scarcely stand, what shall happen to the
ungodly and sinners? 1 Peter 4:17-18.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For He (God) has made Him (Jesus) to be sin for
us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.
We that believe shall all stand
before the judgment seat of Christ, but our judgment will be tempered, because
we have believed and followed Christ. “For we must all appear before the
judgment seat of Christ; that everyone may receive the things done in his body,
according to that he has done, whether it be good or bad,” 2 Corinthians
5:10.
The unbelievers shall stand
before the Great White Throne Judgment seat of God after the 1,000 year
Millennium and the second battle of Gog and Magog.
Revelation 20:11-13 And I
saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and
the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the
dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another
book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of
those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the
sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead
which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
We will all be judged. Every man
will give account to his works whether they have been good or evil.
To the righteous, those who have
truly believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God, they shall be
clothed in the righteousness of the Son and accepted by the Father. The
unrighteous who accepted not the gift of eternal life in Christ, shall be
judged by their own works, whether they were evil or whether they were good.
Those whose works were good shall have their lives extended in the afterlife. They
will continue to grow into the knowledge and acceptance of the love of God,
until they too may enter into the Heavenly City New Jerusalem and dwell in the
presence of the most High.
Revelation 21:23-27 And the city had no need
of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did
lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which
are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring
their glory and honour into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by
day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and
honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it
anything that defiles, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or makes a lie:
but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
