The European Hiking Phenomenon
Recently my wife and I joined a Hiking Club. We had been lacking in fellowship and looking for a way to make new friendships. A friend of ours invited us along to her Hiking Club. Her oldest son has brain cancer, so she finds hiking therapeutic not only for herself, but for her whole family. It gets her son out of the house and away from the computer and gives him some healthy exercise. It keeps her busy without her mind on her problems. She is able to have positive conversation and fellowship while hiking along an inspiring mountain path.
My wife and I decided to give it a go and found it very inspiring, everything that our friend Fernanda had argued and more. However, waking up at six-thirty on Sunday morning was not my idea of a good time. I would have to see if it was really worth it. The first hike we nearly missed our ride by being late. The couple who were to give us a lift to the hiking location waited to the last possible moment before deciding to leave without us. My wife had been making the arrangements the night before on Facebook, but did not have their phone. Fortunately, we saw them at the last intersection leaving town and flagged them down. We parked our car, got in with them and were on our way to a new adventure.
I was shocked when we arrived at eight o’clock at the meeting place to find nearly fifty people ready to drive another thirty minutes or more to the hike’s starting point. What was it that would cause these fifty people to sacrifice their Sunday morning sleep-in to attend? We saw Fernanda and her husband and children and waved hello as the cars pulled out in single file. In about thirty-five minutes we were all exiting our cars, some friends were extending warm greetings while others were standing solitary, waiting for the commencement of the hike.
At the given moment the guide called everyone together to form a giant circle. Saying hello to everyone, he explained the course of today’s hike, its length, and various points of interest both historical and cultural. At the end he asked a female assistant to read a part from a famous Portuguese poem exalting nature and her beauties. We all clapped hands and then followed quickly behind the guide as he led us off into the nearby hills.
I couldn’t but feel that the hiking phenomenon had a religious element to it. It was almost as if we had said a little prayer to the Goddess of Nature asking her blessing on our intrusion into her domain. In the absence of the traditional church service and obligatory attendance people were seeking spiritual input here in the beauties of the mountains. Walking along the paths surrounded by gorgeous views of nature or pastoral farms or scenes, one absorbs the peaceful, calming effect of being in nature’s embrace.
I asked one of the hikers why he enjoyed hiking. He replied, “It gets me away from my problems for the day. I spend a beautiful day in nature, seeing some wonderful sights, having some positive fellowship with others, and getting some good physical exercise and fresh air. It is not that my problems go away. They are still there when I get home, but it somehow gives me strength to confront them once again. I get strength of spirit from these mountain walks. It helps me to stop thinking and worrying about my problems.”
His mountain walks had become his place of spiritual refuge and refilling. They had become his amusement or pastime. The word “muse” means to think, to ponder, to dwell upon. The “a” in amusement is a negative like the “a” in atheist. A theist is a person who believes in God, while an atheist is a person who does not believe in God. So amusement actually means to not think, or ponder or dwell upon. Like a football game or a television show, an amusement distracts us from thinking about our problems. It may also distract us from our work or thinking and preparing for the days ahead.
Because church service has failed to fulfill the spiritual needs of its flock, especially here in Europe, today’s generation is seeking for the spiritual in these mountain walks. Not only in the various hiking clubs that have sprung up around Portugal, but the interest in Reiki, Buddhism, meditation, and yoga show that the old-time religion has failed. The people seek a new thing, a new way to fulfill the spiritual void they feel within. Because of the churches failure to feed its flock, Christianity has fell on hard times. Many have disserted the message of Christ as a result and go aimlessly searching for truth in these other “isms,” not realizing the dangers and lies that wait to entangle them.
My daughter and I have just returned from a ten day one hundred and eighty-eight km hike to Santiago de Compostela. Although the hike is supposed to be a religious or spiritual exercise for members of the Catholic Church, we found most people hiking were not church members. Many were not even believers. But along the mountain paths one feels the presence of God even if you do not believe in Him. He imparts His peaceful and calming effect to all those who pass within His presence in nature.
Man’s spiritual search has not ended. Sadly, because of the Church’s failure to transmit the truth, men are looking elsewhere. Even in the Pilgrim’s Hostels along the way to the great Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, you can get a massage by a Reiki master for ten Euros. You might even have a spiritual experience in the course of it and get “enlightened” or spiritually enhanced not knowing the power or energy is a counterfeit and coming from the dark side.
As mankind rejects Christianity because of the Church’s failure to impart truth and the spiritual, a new age of Darkness looms in the foreground where today’s “isms” will be tomorrow’s creeds. Darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people, but those that know the Lord and His truth shall shine as lights and His presence shall be upon them.[1]
Will you be strong in those days, doing exploits and enlightening the masses to the true God?[2] Or will you also sit in gross darkness because you have abandoned the true light for a cheap imitation? Jesus said, “If the light that is in thee is darkness, how great is that darkness.”[3] In other words, “If what you believe is light, is actually darkness, you are really deceived and are in great darkness.” Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”[4] “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”[5]
Are you walking in the light? Or has the god of this world blinded your mind so that the glorious gospel of Christ is hid from you?[6] Has the serpent beguiled you through his subtlety, so that your mind is corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ?[7] Have you forgotten your maker and gone after false gods, false “isms” that satisfy not?[8] For if Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light, is it a great thing if his ministers also be transformed as ministers of righteousness?[9] Have you departed from the true faith which is in Christ and given heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils which have a form of godliness, but deny the divinity and power of Jesus Christ?[10] Will you call upon our Lord and God in Jesus’ name that he may recover you out of the snare of the devil, even though you were his willful captive?[11]
The choice is yours. Our spiritual adversary walks about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.[12] Are you in his clutches? Call upon Jesus and He will come running. Where there is life, there is hope. Time is still on your side. Call upon Jesus today. Tomorrow may be too late. The true freedom and love and happiness you seek is in Jesus. He’s just a prayer away. Call upon Him today.[13] You won’t be disappointed.

Ser o tipo de seguidor de Jesus que Ele descreveu, que faz sua morada nEle, significa ter o EspÃrito Santo, o EspÃrito de Deus habitando ricamente em si. Significa que devemos fazer o máximo possÃvel por alinhar nossos pensamentos, reações e atitudes aos de Jesus. The Right to Say ‘God’ Divides a Diverse Nation

KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia—As the students knelt in a circle at a Christian kindergarten near the shores of the South China Sea, a 6-year-old girl in pigtails read out a chapter from a children’s Bible: “Sepuluh hukum dari Allah”—God’s Ten Commandments.
Technically, she broke the law.
According to a series of government orders and rulings by Malaysia’s Islamic councils, the word for God in the Malay language—“Allah”—is reserved for Muslims. Malay-language Bibles are banned everywhere except inside churches. State regulations ban a list of words, including Allah, in any non-Muslim context.
Malaysia, with its collage of ethnic groups and religions, has a long history of tensions over issues ranging from dietary differences to the economic preferences enshrined in Malaysian law for the Malay Muslim majority.
But there is probably no dispute more fundamental and more emotionally charged than who owns the word God.
For Malaysia’s religious minorities, the government’s ban on non-Muslims using the word Allah, and the repeated seizures by government officials of Malay-language Bibles, is enough to make a smiling and cheery kindergarten teacher snap in anger.
“Honestly I think it’s nonsense,” said Belinda Buntot, the teacher in the kindergarten here on the northern tip of the island of Borneo. “Of course we use Allah. We can’t teach the kids without it.”
The government’s National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs deliberated on the issue of whether non-Muslims have the right to use the word Allah and issued a fatwa. “The conference decided that the word Allah is a sacred word specific only to the religion and followers of Islam and it cannot be used or made to be similar with religions other than Islam,” said the fatwa, which was posted on the government’s “e-fatwa” website.
Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, and Muslims are governed by Shariah, though Christians, Hindus and Buddhists make up sizable minorities. Outside the country, the government has sought to cultivate an image of a modern, moderate Islamic state, where 60 percent of the population is Muslim, and minorities live harmoniously.
But Christians, who make up 10 percent of the population, say the Allah ban is one of many signs that a conservative Islamic movement is steering an increasingly intolerant government policy.
In recent weeks, the religious authorities have barred Muslims from taking part in Halloween and scolded them for petting dogs, which the state Islamic authorities view as unclean.
The government’s Department of Islamic Development did not respond to a request to explain the official position on the Allah ban, but over the years the government has offered a number of reasons.
When the government first prohibited the “printing, publication, sale, issue, circulation or possession” of Malay-language Bibles in 1981, it said the books were “prejudicial to the national interest and security” of the country.
Islamic authorities have warned that Malay-language Bibles could be used for proselytizing Muslims, which is illegal in Malaysia.
The Department of Islamic Development argues that Allah is not a generic name for God but signifies “the religion of the person who uses it.”
“That is the reason why the usage needs to be monitored and preserved by the government in order to ensure that no one will be confused with the most exalted name,” the department says on its website.
Perhaps more than at any time in recent decades, Malaysia’s moderate voices are sounding an alarm.
Zainah Anwar, the founder of Sisters in Islam, a women’s rights group, describes a “headlong descent into a puritanical, extremist, intolerant brand of Islam in this country.”
“Malaysia’s moderate Islam is only touted for Western consumption,” she wrote in The Star newspaper on Sunday.
Ms. Zainah also wrote, “For too long this government has given almost a carte blanche to the religious authorities and the belligerent supremacists to take the lead and define what Islam is and is not.”
Enforcement is patchy for the Allah rule, which has been promulgated in different forms and by different government and religious authorities over the past three decades. But the rule has been upheld by the country’s highest courts.
Islamic scholars say banning non-Muslims from using “Allah” is unique to Malaysia.
“You can’t find this idea in any previous Islamic discourse,” said Yahya Cholil Staquf, a senior cleric at Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, Malaysia’s neighbor and the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country. “Every language has its own word for God. Allah is just a word to acknowledge God. It’s not a word for only Muslims.”
The Christian minority in Indonesia, where the lingua franca is similar to Malaysia’s, refers to God as Allah without any controversy; Indonesian Bibles are often imported into Malaysia, when they are not seized by the authorities.
On Tuesday, a court in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, is scheduled to begin deliberations in a long-running case over the seizure in 2007 of a box of Sunday school materials, including coloring books and Bible story books, that used the word Allah.
The books were eventually returned, but their owner, a large evangelical Christian denomination, Sidang Injil Borneo, is challenging the constitutionality of the seizure because such confiscations continue. Malaysian customs agents seized compact discs and books destined for a Borneo church in late October.
Minorities need clarity on freedom of religion in the country, said the Rev. Jerry Dusing, the church president.
“No law can prohibit anyone from the reasonable practice of their faith,” he said in an interview. “Why on earth are they banning words?”
The Roman Catholic Church has also been embroiled in a court case challenging Malaysia’s Allah ban after the government ordered that its newsletter, The Herald, stop using Allah.
When a judge ruled in the church’s favor in 2009, 10 churches were vandalized, one gutted by fire. An appeals court overturned the ruling last year.
Like Christianity, Islam was introduced here by foreigners. Arab traders spread Islam and Arab culture here, infusing the Malay language with words like Allah. Christianity came centuries later, with the arrival of missionaries from the West and European colonialism.
Liberal Muslims, who like many Christians say they are concerned with what they see as the growing power of conservative forces, see reasons other than theology behind the ban.
In Malaysia’s ethnic-based politics, it is in the interest of politicians from the governing coalition to play up perceived threats to Islam, says Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the executive director of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs, a research organization in Kuala Lumpur that promotes liberal democracy and free markets.
The United Malays National Organization, or UMNO, has been the dominant party of the coalition in power for 57 years, but the group was nearly toppled by a multiethnic coalition of parties last year.
“The more Muslims feel they are under threat, the more UMNO can maintain its political hegemony,” Mr. Wan Saiful said.
Mr. Wan Saiful says Malaysia’s conservative Muslims are disconnected from the wider Islamic world. Arabic-language Bibles used by Christians in countries such as Egypt and Lebanon use the word Allah for God.
He was attending a conference overseas this year when the court affirmed the ban on the Catholic Church using Allah in its newsletter.
“This Palestinian guy came up to me and said: ‘The world is laughing at you. I’m from an Arab country and everyone uses the word, every day.’”

Malay-language Bibles are banned everywhere except inside churches. State regulations ban a list of words, including Allah, in any non-Muslim context.
Malaysia, with its collage of ethnic groups and religions, has a long history of tensions over issues ranging from dietary differences to the economic preferences enshrined in Malaysian law for the Malay Muslim majority.
But there is probably no dispute more fundamental and more emotionally charged than who owns the word God.
For Malaysia’s religious minorities, the government’s ban on non-Muslims using the word Allah, and the repeated seizures by government officials of Malay-language Bibles, is enough to make a smiling and cheery kindergarten teacher snap in anger.
“Honestly I think it’s nonsense,” said Belinda Buntot, the teacher in the kindergarten here on the northern tip of the island of Borneo. “Of course we use Allah. We can’t teach the kids without it.”
The government’s National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs deliberated on the issue of whether non-Muslims have the right to use the word Allah and issued a fatwa. “The conference decided that the word Allah is a sacred word specific only to the religion and followers of Islam and it cannot be used or made to be similar with religions other than Islam,” said the fatwa, which was posted on the government’s “e-fatwa” website.
Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, and Muslims are governed by Shariah, though Christians, Hindus and Buddhists make up sizable minorities. Outside the country, the government has sought to cultivate an image of a modern, moderate Islamic state, where 60 percent of the population is Muslim, and minorities live harmoniously.
But Christians, who make up 10 percent of the population, say the Allah ban is one of many signs that a conservative Islamic movement is steering an increasingly intolerant government policy.
In recent weeks, the religious authorities have barred Muslims from taking part in Halloween and scolded them for petting dogs, which the state Islamic authorities view as unclean.
The government’s Department of Islamic Development did not respond to a request to explain the official position on the Allah ban, but over the years the government has offered a number of reasons.
When the government first prohibited the “printing, publication, sale, issue, circulation or possession” of Malay-language Bibles in 1981, it said the books were “prejudicial to the national interest and security” of the country.
Islamic authorities have warned that Malay-language Bibles could be used for proselytizing Muslims, which is illegal in Malaysia.
The Department of Islamic Development argues that Allah is not a generic name for God but signifies “the religion of the person who uses it.”
“That is the reason why the usage needs to be monitored and preserved by the government in order to ensure that no one will be confused with the most exalted name,” the department says on its website.
Perhaps more than at any time in recent decades, Malaysia’s moderate voices are sounding an alarm.
Zainah Anwar, the founder of Sisters in Islam, a women’s rights group, describes a “headlong descent into a puritanical, extremist, intolerant brand of Islam in this country.”
“Malaysia’s moderate Islam is only touted for Western consumption,” she wrote in The Star newspaper on Sunday.
Ms. Zainah also wrote, “For too long this government has given almost a carte blanche to the religious authorities and the belligerent supremacists to take the lead and define what Islam is and is not.”
Enforcement is patchy for the Allah rule, which has been promulgated in different forms and by different government and religious authorities over the past three decades. But the rule has been upheld by the country’s highest courts.
Islamic scholars say banning non-Muslims from using “Allah” is unique to Malaysia.
“You can’t find this idea in any previous Islamic discourse,” said Yahya Cholil Staquf, a senior cleric at Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, Malaysia’s neighbor and the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country. “Every language has its own word for God. Allah is just a word to acknowledge God. It’s not a word for only Muslims.”
The Christian minority in Indonesia, where the lingua franca is similar to Malaysia’s, refers to God as Allah without any controversy; Indonesian Bibles are often imported into Malaysia, when they are not seized by the authorities.
On Tuesday, a court in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, is scheduled to begin deliberations in a long-running case over the seizure in 2007 of a box of Sunday school materials, including coloring books and Bible story books, that used the word Allah.
The books were eventually returned, but their owner, a large evangelical Christian denomination, Sidang Injil Borneo, is challenging the constitutionality of the seizure because such confiscations continue. Malaysian customs agents seized compact discs and books destined for a Borneo church in late October.
Minorities need clarity on freedom of religion in the country, said the Rev. Jerry Dusing, the church president.
“No law can prohibit anyone from the reasonable practice of their faith,” he said in an interview. “Why on earth are they banning words?”
The Roman Catholic Church has also been embroiled in a court case challenging Malaysia’s Allah ban after the government ordered that its newsletter, The Herald, stop using Allah.
When a judge ruled in the church’s favor in 2009, 10 churches were vandalized, one gutted by fire. An appeals court overturned the ruling last year.
Like Christianity, Islam was introduced here by foreigners. Arab traders spread Islam and Arab culture here, infusing the Malay language with words like Allah. Christianity came centuries later, with the arrival of missionaries from the West and European colonialism.
Liberal Muslims, who like many Christians say they are concerned with what they see as the growing power of conservative forces, see reasons other than theology behind the ban.
In Malaysia’s ethnic-based politics, it is in the interest of politicians from the governing coalition to play up perceived threats to Islam, says Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the executive director of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs, a research organization in Kuala Lumpur that promotes liberal democracy and free markets.
The United Malays National Organization, or UMNO, has been the dominant party of the coalition in power for 57 years, but the group was nearly toppled by a multiethnic coalition of parties last year.
“The more Muslims feel they are under threat, the more UMNO can maintain its political hegemony,” Mr. Wan Saiful said.
Mr. Wan Saiful says Malaysia’s conservative Muslims are disconnected from the wider Islamic world. Arabic-language Bibles used by Christians in countries such as Egypt and Lebanon use the word Allah for God.
He was attending a conference overseas this year when the court affirmed the ban on the Catholic Church using Allah in its newsletter.

A sincronicidade do universo é um assunto popular: a expressão de sua intenção e a provisão do universo. Para mim é Jesus vendo a nossa necessidade e Suas mãos estendidas para supri-la. Também é Seu ombro no qual chorar durante trechos difÃceis da jornada e Seus braços para me consolar. É o Seu sorriso, sempre presente para me encorajar, e Suas pegadas à s quais seguir.
De 2007 a 2009 fiquei de cama. Fui diagnosticada com um caso grave de fibromialgia e fatiga adrenal. Eu precisava de ajuda—e muita ajuda. Precisava de um milagre. Sonhos guiavam o meu caminho; sussurros de esperança no meu desespero para recuperar. Seguir Suas pegadas era a única esperança.
Desde 2005, meu marido e eu operávamos uma arrecadação de alimentos nos mercados de fim de semana locais. Em 2009, enquanto ajudávamos nos mercados, conheci Jan. Isto poderia levar a no futuro eu vir a publicar um livro, falar em eventos, dar seminários, ser coach e fazer o marketing do meu próprio livro e suplementos.
Os caminhos de Deus são tão diferentes dos caminhos do homem, Ele faz maravilhas. Para realizar tudo isso eu deveria estar no auge da boa saúde—mas, até neste exato momento, ainda estou longe disso. Enquanto minha cabeça está se enchendo de conhecimento e o meu coração derramando essas palavras, a aparente fantasia de escrever um livro, liderar seminários, ser comerciante de internet, coach e oradora estão longe de mim—talvez em outra vida.
Mas e se Ele me chamar para esses campos? E se eu me curar completamente? Ou e se eu só me curar o suficiente para seguir desesperadamente as Suas pegadas na minha extrema fraqueza e dependência de cada palavra dEle, cada pegada que começo a ver marcada na areia à minha frente? Será que esse é o caminho dEle? Ainda vou ter que descobrir, mas há um precedente para isso. Ao longo de toda a história os fracos são escolhidos para realizar as obras de Deus, porque sabem quem está lhes dando os resultados. É muito mais fácil dar glória a Deus quando você mal consegue falar, quando tem dificuldades para estar de pé durante o tempo que for, quando seu corpo está fragilizado por uma dor incessante, e quando não tem clareza de pensamento.
Quando Ele me preenche com Sua presença e eu me entrego, sei quem está operando através de mim, um vaso submisso que só quer fazer a suprema vontade de Deus. Não restam dúvidas de quem está realizando a obra. A única pergunta é como. Isto é parte do milagre, a graça impressionante, a pura alegria e esplendor de se submeter Àquele que ama a todos nós mais do que conseguimos imaginar. Tal é a importância de Suas pegadas, que me determinei a seguir. “Quer você se volte para a direita quer para a esquerda, uma voz atrás de você lhe dirá: “Este é o caminho; siga-o”.”[1]
Na verdade, eu já publiquei meus escritos; já fui coach, palestrante, conduzi seminários e vendi produtos via Internet. Tudo o que preciso agora é seguir Suas pegadas para o meu futuro, que pode conter mais ênfases nesses talentos e dons com os quais fui agraciada.
“Sua saúde, sua vida, sua maneira,” é o slogan da nossa empresa de ciência da saúde. Como sócia desta empresa, equipada com os talentos que adquiri como missionária veterana, professora, educadora, mãe e esposa, eu me pergunto se não estaria na hora de ter uma oportunidade de desenvolver mais essas habilidades. Ainda estou observando as pegadas.
Qual é a sua paixão que poderia ajudar outros? Provavelmente é algo pertinente em sua vida, assim como a minha era saúde. Todos os caminhos o guiam a ela; ela a chama, frustra, e você tem que encontrar a resposta. Você se vê buscando-a, e a informação flui até você de todas as direções sobre o assunto. Os fragmentos começam a unir os pontos e a formar um quadro. Você se sente compelido a falar sobre isso, escrever sobre isso, compartilhar com as pessoas que procuram as informações que você tem, e por sua vez espalham a notÃcia. Você se torna uma fonte confiável e as pessoas ouvem que você é honesto, de boa reputação e confiança. Talvez até queiram ouvir sobre o seu Salvador por você ser um testemunho, alguém sempre pronto a ajudar, sempre à disposição, até mesmo sem você nunca mencionar uma palavra sobre sua fé até começarem a confiar em você.
É um caminho impressionante de se seguir—e sim, foi inesperado—mas estou muito feliz por ter seguido até agora e muito empolgada por ter um vislumbre do que me aguarda no futuro um pouco mais para frente para ver onde Ele está guiando, segurando na mão dEle como uma criança faz com seu pai. “Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation. … All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it.”—Hebrews 11:2, 131
If you reflect on My great men and women who have gone before you—those mentioned in the Bible, and others since that time—you will note how each lived for Me and accomplished great things in My name. Some of them, such as those mentioned in Hebrews 11, never received all that I had promised them during their time on earth. But their faith didn't waver, and because of that, they went on to receive their full and great eternal rewards.
Are there areas in your life where you wonder if I'll ever come through for you? Or is there something I've said that you worry might not happen the way you hope or expect? Think on that great cloud of witnesses, and meditate on what advice they'd give you. Let your spirit be refueled by their example, and let your mind be set at rest by their fortitude. Just as I came through for them, I will come through for you.

When the game is in full swing, time on the clock is running out, and the score looks pretty close, I cheer you on. When I know that your defense is weak, I shout out to you to let you know. When I see that your offense is slacking, I pick up My megaphone and I make sure that you're alerted to it. When the Enemy has scored a point and I see your face drop in disappointment, I cheer you on enthusiastically. I yell Boo! at the Devil and his crowd.
You can count on Me to boost your self-esteem. Best of all, once you've scored a shot or won the game, there isn't a more appreciative voice in the crowd than Mine! I cheer, I dance, and I get all the hosts of heaven rooting for you. You've never seen a fan club like Mine.
Eternal sunshine
“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.”—2 Corinthians 4:63
Keep your eyes on Me no matter what you face. The skies may be dark at times, the winds may blow, the waters may be deep and murky, and the waves may crash all around you. There may be no apparent way of escape. But I am your escape. I am the sunshine that chases away the dark clouds. My voice will still the tumultuous waves. My rays of sunlight will make the waters clear so that you can see the wondrous coral and all of the splendor that lies under the surface of the ocean of life.
So when all around you seems dark and gloomy, turn your eyes toward Me, your eternal sunshine. I will shine brightly upon your life and I will calm the seas, helping you to find peace and security.
Patience
“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”—James 1:2–4, 124
Patience is a virtue; it is priceless. Patience can only grow through experience. So treasure the times when your patience is tried, and don't anxiously wait for Me to rescue you prematurely. Make the most of each test. Realize that I have a purpose and a plan that will work out for your best.
Will you take the path of impatience, grumbling, self-pity, and anguish of heart and mind? Or, will you take the road of patience, acceptance, trust, and determination to make the most of this time of waiting on Me? The second path is definitely recommended. You'll arrive at your destination fulfilled, happy, and satisfied with the trek, sporting sleek, developed muscles of patience. Whereas if you take the first path, you'll arrive disheartened, weak, weary, and dreading what I will bring along your path next.
Choose the path of patience and trust at every turn, and you will not regret it. I will be able to bring you to your destination more quickly, and you'll be thankful for the gifts that you have gained through the journey.
A majestic plan
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”—Philippians 4:6–75
I can fit everything into My majestic plan for your good, including the things you wish were different. How you long to see that all-embracing pattern—though you wouldn’t understand it even if I showed you!

What you find most difficult to accept is the way the future looks to you: basing your predictions on current circumstances. But the future is one of those secret things beyond your domain. Release it to Me, the rightful owner. Refuse to worry about the future, and you will find your resources for today quite sufficient. “Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation. … All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it.”—Hebrews 11:2, 131
If you reflect on My great men and women who have gone before you—those mentioned in the Bible, and others since that time—you will note how each lived for Me and accomplished great things in My name. Some of them, such as those mentioned in Hebrews 11, never received all that I had promised them during their time on earth. But their faith didn't waver, and because of that, they went on to receive their full and great eternal rewards.
Are there areas in your life where you wonder if I'll ever come through for you? Or is there something I've said that you worry might not happen the way you hope or expect? Think on that great cloud of witnesses, and meditate on what advice they'd give you. Let your spirit be refueled by their example, and let your mind be set at rest by their fortitude. Just as I came through for them, I will come through for you.

When the game is in full swing, time on the clock is running out, and the score looks pretty close, I cheer you on. When I know that your defense is weak, I shout out to you to let you know. When I see that your offense is slacking, I pick up My megaphone and I make sure that you're alerted to it. When the Enemy has scored a point and I see your face drop in disappointment, I cheer you on enthusiastically. I yell Boo! at the Devil and his crowd.
You can count on Me to boost your self-esteem. Best of all, once you've scored a shot or won the game, there isn't a more appreciative voice in the crowd than Mine! I cheer, I dance, and I get all the hosts of heaven rooting for you. You've never seen a fan club like Mine.
Eternal sunshine
“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.”—2 Corinthians 4:63
Keep your eyes on Me no matter what you face. The skies may be dark at times, the winds may blow, the waters may be deep and murky, and the waves may crash all around you. There may be no apparent way of escape. But I am your escape. I am the sunshine that chases away the dark clouds. My voice will still the tumultuous waves. My rays of sunlight will make the waters clear so that you can see the wondrous coral and all of the splendor that lies under the surface of the ocean of life.
So when all around you seems dark and gloomy, turn your eyes toward Me, your eternal sunshine. I will shine brightly upon your life and I will calm the seas, helping you to find peace and security.
Patience
“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”—James 1:2–4, 124
Patience is a virtue; it is priceless. Patience can only grow through experience. So treasure the times when your patience is tried, and don't anxiously wait for Me to rescue you prematurely. Make the most of each test. Realize that I have a purpose and a plan that will work out for your best.
Will you take the path of impatience, grumbling, self-pity, and anguish of heart and mind? Or, will you take the road of patience, acceptance, trust, and determination to make the most of this time of waiting on Me? The second path is definitely recommended. You'll arrive at your destination fulfilled, happy, and satisfied with the trek, sporting sleek, developed muscles of patience. Whereas if you take the first path, you'll arrive disheartened, weak, weary, and dreading what I will bring along your path next.
Choose the path of patience and trust at every turn, and you will not regret it. I will be able to bring you to your destination more quickly, and you'll be thankful for the gifts that you have gained through the journey.
A majestic plan
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”—Philippians 4:6–75
I can fit everything into My majestic plan for your good, including the things you wish were different. How you long to see that all-embracing pattern—though you wouldn’t understand it even if I showed you!

A Segunda Vinda de Jesus Cristo

“Pois ainda em pouco tempo aquele que há de vir virá, e não tardará.” — Hebreus 10:37[1]
O domÃnio e regime do Anticristo vão parecer o triunfo final do homem sem Deus, o qual parecerá ter sido derrotado, e a igreja, aparentemente, aniquilada. Contudo, o Anticristo e suas forças não contam com o poder sobrenatural e absoluto de Deus e Ele vai conquistar Sua maior vitória daquilo que parece ser uma derrota.
Justamente quando o maligno Anticristo pensa ter tudo sob controle, quando por fim é adorado por todo o mundo e se senta “como Deus, no templo de Deus, querendo parecer Deus”[2], Jesus chega, de repente, como um raio do céu, e arrebata deste mundo todos os Seus filhos — os crentes que recusaram a Marca da Besta na testa ou na mão, que se recusaram a adorar o Anticristo, preferindo amar, viver para Jesus e até morrer por Ele.
Logo após a hora mais escura da história do mundo, virá a alvorada mais brilhante. Jesus voltará para resgatar os Seus, Sua igreja, Seu povo, todos que O amam, O conhecem, e acreditam que Ele é o Filho de Deus, o Messias. Ele vai dizer: “Parem o mundo! Quero que eles desçam!” “Os que ficarmos vivos, seremos arrebatados juntamente com eles nas nuvens, para o encontro do Senhor nos ares, e assim estaremos para sempre com o Senhor.”[3]
Para os cristãos, a Segunda Vinda de Jesus será o mais importante acontecimento profetizado, pois significará o fim deste mundo como o conhecemos, da presença de nossos corpos fÃsicos nele. Após Sua vinda seremos transladados, arrebatados, levados juntos para encontrá-lo nos ares e então para lugares celestiais. Sua vinda é quando tudo muda, é o fim desta vida e do nosso trabalho na terra. A partir daÃ, para nós o tempo não mais existirá, como dizem algumas traduções, e entraremos no eterno agora.[4]
Os tempos e perÃodos da Segunda Vinda
Deus definiu um prazo e um cronograma para Seu filho, Jesus Cristo, regressar à Terra e resgatar Seu povo. Ele será pontual e chegará ao fim da contagem regressiva, sem nenhum atraso. Jesus cumprirá Sua Palavra. Pode ficar tranquilo que Ele não mudará de planos nem contradirá tudo que Ele mesmo ensinou ou que os profetas predisseram e os apóstolos escreveram. Jesus não vai negar fogo, mas voltará para cumprir as profecias especÃficas e detalhadas em Sua Palavra com relação aos acontecimentos do Tempo do Fim, que devem se cumprir antes de Sua volta.
A fase final da contagem regressiva para a Segunda Vinda de Cristo começará quando o Anticristo se revelar como o grande lÃder mundial que “fará com muitos povos um acordo que durará sete anos” com relação a Jerusalém e à adoração no templo judeu.[5]Exatos 1.260 dias após a celebração do acordo, o Anticristo o revogará e terá inÃcio o perÃodo da Grande Tribulação, em que ele erige sua imagem no lugar santo para que seja adorada e ordena que todos recebam sua marca na testa e na mão.
O próprio Jesus disse: “Quando virdes que a abominação da desolação, de que falou o profeta Daniel, está no lugar santo, haverá então grande aflição, como nunca houve desde o princÃpio do mundo até agora, nem haverá jamais.”[6] Quando o Anticristo instalar essa imagem no templo em Jerusalém, em meados do perÃodo da aliança de sete anos, começará o perÃodo denominado Grande Tribulação, expresso na Sua Palavra de várias maneiras, para que não haja mal-entendidos: três anos e meio,[7] 42 meses[8] e 1.260 dias.[9]
Jesus nos advertiu a não esperarmos que Sua volta aconteça antes do que foi predito. Disse que não haverá dúvidas quando Ele voltar: o céu permanecerá iluminado como um relâmpago que virá de um lado ao outro e haverá tantos sinais nos céus, que não haverá dúvidas de que Ele está chegando.
“Pois assim como o relâmpago sai do oriente e se mostra até o ocidente, assim será também a vinda do Filho do homem.”[10] Ele diz que uma luz virá brilhando do oriente para o ocidente, como um raio. Todo o céu vai permanecer iluminado quando Jesus vier. Enquanto isso, seremos reunidos para encontrá-lO nos ares e todo o mundo verá isso também.
“Onde estiver o cadáver, aà se ajuntarão os abutres.”[11] Aqui Ele fala de forma cifrada e difÃcil de entender que onde estiver Cristo, ali se encontrarão os que dEle se alimentam.— Pode parecer uma comparação de mau gosto, que nos coloca como abutres que se alimentam do corpo de Cristo. Porém, Ele disse: “Se não comerem Minha carne e não beberem Meu sangue, não têm parte em Mim.”[12] Aqui Ele está falando de quando nos encontraremos com Ele, quando formos arrebatados para Ele. De onde quer que estejam Seus seguidores, serão atraÃdos como um Ãmã, como abutres para um cadáver, aqueles que têm de se alimentar do Cristo para viverem espiritualmente. Onde estiver o cadáver, ali estaremos, juntos, os pequenos abutres.
“Logo depois da aflição daqueles dias, o sol escurecerá, a lua não dará a sua luz, as estrelas cairão do firmamento e os corpos celestes serão abalados. Então aparecerá no céu o sinal do Filho do homem, e todos os povos da terra se lamentarão e verão o Filho do homem, vindo sobre as nuvens do céu, com poder e grande glória. E ele enviará os seus anjos, com grande clangor de trombeta, os quais ajuntarão os seus escolhidos desde os quatro ventos, de uma à outra extremidade dos céus.”[13]
O que poderia ser mais cataclÃsmico, dramático, extraordinário e óbvio que a vinda do Senhor, conforme descreveu nessa passagem o próprio Jesus? O céu inteiro se iluminará como um relâmpago, os salvos de todas as eras literalmente se encontrarão no ar, o sol e a lua se escurecerão, meteoros cairão e Jesus aparecerá nos céus atmosféricos, pelo que os não salvos se lamentarão e chorarão, quando virem Sua chegada nas nuvens “com poder e grande glória”.
“Mas, irmãos, acerca dos tempos e das épocas, não necessitais de que se vos escreva, pois vós mesmos sabeis muito bem que o dia do Senhor virá como o ladrão de noite. Quando andarem dizendo: Há paz e segurança, então lhes sobrevirá repentina destruição, como as dores de parto à quela que está grávida, e de modo nenhum escaparão.”[14]
Será uma destruição sem aviso, repentina. Seus falsos profetas lhes dirão: “Está tudo em paz agora e vocês não têm de se preocupar com nada. Temos o governo mundial, temos nosso Anticristo, temos o nosso messias, temos o nosso super-homem que agora governa o mundo e tudo está bem. Paz e segurança.” É quando serão repentinamente destruÃdos! Jesus voltará, resgatará Sua noiva e Deus começará a derramar Sua ira e juÃzos sobre o império mundial do Anticristo.
“Mas vós, irmãos, já não estais em trevas, para que esse dia (o da segunda vinda de Cristo) vos surpreenda como um ladrão.”[15] Os cristãos que conhecem Sua palavra e “os sinais dos tempos”[16] não se surpreenderão. Não é possÃvel precisar dia e hora em que voltará Jesus, mas podemos saber que, aproximadamente três anos e meio depois de ser erguida a abominação da desolação, faltará pouco para a vinda de Jesus.
“Todos vós sois filhos da luz, e filhos do dia. Nós não somos da noite, nem das trevas. Não durmamos, pois, como os demais, mas vigiemos, e sejamos sóbrios. Pois os que dormem, dormem de noite, e os que se embriagam, embriagam-se de noite. Nós, porém, que somos do dia, sejamos sóbrios, revestindo-nos da couraça da fé e do amor, e tendo por capacete a esperança da salvação.”[17]
A magnificente Segunda Vinda de Jesus não pegará Seus filhos de surpresa, como um ladrão à noite. Isso é o que acontecerá ao resto do mundo, quando virem “o Filho do homem, vindo sobre as nuvens do céu, com poder e grande glória”.[18] Nosso arrebatamento ou nossa ressurreição é parte do nosso triunfo, da vitória que Deus nos dará, nosso grande êxodo deste mundo.
Lemos no Apocalipse: “Ele vem com as nuvens e todo o olho o verá.”[19] Que testemunho maior poderia haver que a ressurreição e o arrebatamento? É o testemunho final, quando virem Jesus e nós ressurgirmos dos mortos, deixarmos a terra para encontrá-lo no ar.
Ninguém que ama Jesus será deixado para trás. Ninguém que tenha recebido Jesus como Salvador será deixado para trás. Ninguém que for salvo será deixado para trás. Nenhum cristão genuÃno, que crê na BÃblia, confia em Cristo e ama Jesus será deixado para trás. “Seremos transformados”[20] e ressuscitaremos. Ele enviará Seus anjos para reunir Seus filhos de todos os lugares, de todo o mundo e não deixará ninguém para trás. Não esquecerá nenhum sequer. Não é maravilhoso?

Lemos no Apocalipse: “Ele vem com as nuvens e todo o olho o verá.”[19] Que testemunho maior poderia haver que a ressurreição e o arrebatamento? É o testemunho final, quando virem Jesus e nós ressurgirmos dos mortos, deixarmos a terra para encontrá-lo no ar.
Ninguém que ama Jesus será deixado para trás. Ninguém que tenha recebido Jesus como Salvador será deixado para trás. Ninguém que for salvo será deixado para trás. Nenhum cristão genuÃno, que crê na BÃblia, confia em Cristo e ama Jesus será deixado para trás. “Seremos transformados”[20] e ressuscitaremos. Ele enviará Seus anjos para reunir Seus filhos de todos os lugares, de todo o mundo e não deixará ninguém para trás. Não esquecerá nenhum sequer. Não é maravilhoso?

The James whose shrine is at Santiago de Compostela, in north-west Spain, was the brother of John (possibly the Evangelist). The Gospels (Matthew 4, 21-22; Mark 1, 19-20; Luke 5, 10-11) record that they were fishermen, the sons of Zebedee, partners with Simon Peter, and called by Jesus from mending their nets beside the sea of Galilee at the beginning of his ministry. The Gospel lists of the Twelve (Matthew 10, 2-4; Mark 3, 14-19; Luke 6, 13-16) all include James and John among the first four, and from one of them (Mark 3,17) we learn that Jesus nicknamed them 'the sons of thunder' - perhaps justified by the story (Luke 9, 51-56) that they once wished to call down fire from heaven to destroy a village which had refused them hospitality.
James and John were present at the healing of Peter's mother-in-law (Mark1, 29), and at the raising of Jairus's daughter (Mark 5, 37; Luke 8, 51). They are described in private conversation with Jesus on the mount of Olives (Mark 13, 3). They were also present, with Peter (but not Andrew), at the Transfiguration, a key event in Jesus's life (Matthew 17, 1-13; Mark 9, 2-8; Luke 9, 28-36), and again, the same three disciples are called apart from the others in Gethsemane (Matthew 26, 37; Mark 14, 33).
Their mother Salome - or they themselves - asked Jesus to accord them places on his right and his left when he came into his kingdom (Matthew 20, 20-28; Mark 10, 35-45), when they also declared themselves ready to drink from the same cup as Jesus - i.e. to accept martyrdom. Finally, the sons of Zebedee are specifically mentioned as present at one of the post-resurrection appearances (John 21, 2), on the lakeshore of Tiberias; and among those gathered in the upper room after the ascension (Acts 1, 13). The only certain fact recorded of James afterwards is his martyrdom (Acts 12, 1-2) at the hands of Herod Agrippa I (r. 41-44 A.D.).
He is known as James the Great to distinguish him from James the Less, or James the brother of the Lord (also called by Eusebius James the Just) who became a pillar of the Jerusalem community, and is thought to have been the first bishop of Jerusalem (Galatians 1, 19 and 2, 9). It seems probable that there was a third James, James the son of Alpheus, about whom little more is known.
With Peter and John, James was clearly one of Jesus's closest friends during his ministry, and as such, it is instructive to look for traces of him outside the canonical gospels. Of the 16-odd apocryphal gospels, which have come down to us in more or less fragmentary form, and several of which, to give them the appearance of greater authenticity, are attributed to people who appear in the canonical gospels (eg Thomas, and Mary of Magdala), two are attributed to James the Brother of the Lord, but none to James the Great. The only reference to James the Great in the apocryphal gospels comes in the Gospel of the Ebionites (which survives only in fragments quoted by the 4th century writer Epiphanus), where a version of the story of the call beside the lake of Tiberias is given.
James's absence from the apocryphal gospels is odd, given his pre-eminence in the canonical gospels, but might be explained in part by his early martyrdom, and in part by his departure from Jerusalem: legend has it that when the Apostles divided the known world into missionary zones, the Iberian peninsula fell to James. There is nothing intrinsically implausible about this: Spain was already a well-established part of the Roman world, and Paul, writing in 56 or 57 (Romans 15, 24 & 28), is clear about his own desire to make a missionary journey to Spain. (On the other hand, Paul was generally reluctant to visit places that had been evangelised by others, preferring to found churches of his own, so his reference might be taken as evidence against James having preceded him to Spain ... )
Walking the Via de la Plata (which follows the Roman road north from Seville) today gives you a vivid impression of the Spain James (or Paul) would have known.
7th and 8th century documents (i.e. prior to the discovery of the tomb) refer to the belief that James spent a number of years preaching in Spain before returning to Jerusalem, and martyrdom. His followers are believed to have carried his body down to the coast and put it into a stone boat, which was carried by angels and the wind beyond the Pillars of Hercules (the straits of Gibraltar), to land near Finisterre, at Padrón, on the Atlantic coast of northern Spain. The local Queen, Lupa, provided the team of oxen used to draw the body from Padrón to the site of the marble tomb (Arca Marmorica), a little way inland, which she had also provided. The saint was believed to have been buried with two of his own disciples, Athanasius and Theodore. The site of his tomb was forgotten for some 800 years.

Early in the 9th century a hermit, Pelayo, was led by a vision to the spot. The tomb was rediscovered, and the relics authenticated as those of St James by the local bishop. Spain at this period sorely needed a new champion or focus to inspire Christians against the invading Moors. The rediscovery came therefore at a most propitious moment. And the pilgrimage began ...
Late 19th and 20th century excavations under the cathedral have disclosed a Roman-period tomb below the high altar, and a stone inscribed with the names Athanasius and Theodore.
