O incrédulo entendeu a mensagem!

*

D. Jeffcoat

Sou então inclinado a me expressar dizendo: ‘Como a existência de qualquer coisa é algo extraordinário!’”

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you… In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
—1 Peter 1:3–71

*

I understand the deep pain and disappointment you feel. I was tested in all points like you. I understand the depths of despair when you are faced with the limitations of the earth life and can only see the moment in time you are in. I understand how difficult it is to see past the present to hold on to hope for the future. But I promise to help you through such times of testing. Just call My name and I will be there, right beside you, helping you and holding you up. Lean on Me and My strength, and I will see you through. Things will get better.

*

Keep your eyes on Me! I am with you, taking care of you in the best possible way. When you are suffering, My care may seem imperfect and inadequate. Continue to trust Me, knowing that I do all things well.

Thank Me for this time of neediness, when you must depend on Me more than usual. Do not waste this opportunity by wishing it away. Trust that I know what I’m doing—that I can bring good out of everything you encounter, everything you endure. Don’t let your past or present suffering contaminate your view of the future. I am the Lord of your future, and I have good things in store for you. I alone know the things I am planning for you to give you a future and a hope.2

*

I will reward you for holding on and not giving up in spite of the difficulties you face and the struggle to live your faith. My rewards for your efforts will be worth every fight, every battle, and the taste of victory will be all the sweeter to you, if you just hold on. In looking back you’ll be so thankful that you held on and refused to give up.

Every time you face tough times, instead of thinking, “Oh, how horrible!” you can remind yourself, “I’m a child of God! Every time I declare my faith, every time I witness, every time I act in the name of Jesus, I’m helping to build His kingdom!”

You can look forward to heaven, where all will be at peace and life will be happy, but I have also promised you peace here and now. I want to give you victory and freedom even in the midst of adversity and times of trouble. I have promised you peace that passes all understanding, so you can trust that this peace can be truly yours.

Take a moment to picture the Grand Canyon. Its many levels, from stark cliffs to lush inner sanctums, tell a story. The waters that created this seeming wound in the landscape also bring forth its most beautiful and abundant life deep within.

The same majesty and beauty is formed in your soul as the sometimes raging currents of trials and tests, failures, tears, and suffering create what at first glance may seem to be deep scars on your heart or life. I allow those waters of troubles to flow through your life to create a refuge where My most precious and treasured gifts can grow like rare flowers.

As you look beyond the surface into the depths of a heart reshaped by troubles that were carried to Me, you’ll find that hidden within those canyons are the most beautiful blossoms. Soul blossoms are brilliant and breathtaking in color and fragrance. They are a source of inspiration and comfort to the heart that bears them, and to the spirits of others who venture there in search of comfort, solace, and the waters of My love to slake their thirst. Everything there carries a distinctiveness that says: I am with you and I will never leave you nor forsake you.

*

Have you ever been tempted to wonder why, if I’m always right there with you, comforting you, that you still feel the sadness and the pain? Think about a mother with her young child who has fallen down and gotten hurt. Think about how the mother holds, comforts, and nurtures her little one. Initially, it doesn’t seem to help. The child is still hurting and crying, but in a few moments the pain is forgotten, as the child is comforted through the mother’s love and tenderness. Likewise, when you are hurting, I hold you through the pain, and it won’t be long before My love will have soothed it all away, and you will be happy and able to smile again.

*

There is gold to be found, even in these dark caves which threaten to snuff out your light. That’s My promise to you, My love, when you find yourself in one of these dark caves of life. I go before you and I never allow you to pass through a cave that will not ultimately result in a return to you that will never perish—the treasures and gold of the Spirit. So when you feel like you’re in a deep, dark cave, seek after that gold, never doubting that it is there somewhere, just waiting for you to discover it.

*

I will never give up on you! You may feel like utter scum and that there’s no way I can make something beautiful of your life with all your faults and failings—but I can! I don’t care how dirty you get or how far down you go, I will always lift you out of any pit, clean you up, and give you another chance. Believe in My love and accept that I believe in you and want to use you.

Make a conscious effort to keep your eyes off your mistakes. Don’t think about them. Consider them casualties of war, casualties of the battles you’re fighting. Keep your mind on how I am working these things together for your good and weaving them into My plan for you. Keep your mind on what you’re learning. Picture yourself free from the chains of condemnation and regret. Dwell on the positive, not the negative.

This is a lesson that is often very difficult to learn. It’s so easy to fall into condemnation, because often you set too high a standard for yourself. Always remember that I accept you, just as you are, with your weaknesses and faults, as you raise your hands in praise, look to Me, and determine to receive the victory. Accept that you have weaknesses and that you will make mistakes, and then do your best to obey Me and fulfill My commandments by loving Me and loving others. As you do, I will work through you and create within you something beautiful, and you will fulfill the destiny that I have set before you.

When was the last time you tried threading a needle? You probably licked the end of the thread and held the needle up close, squinting, straining your eyes as you carefully and repeatedly tried to maneuver the thread through the eye of the needle. Sometimes it threads easier than at other times, but almost always there are those moments of difficulty and frustration until you finally manage to get it through. Why would you bother threading that needle in the first place? Because there’s a purpose and a plan. You need to create something or mend something.

Remember this the next time you feel like your trials are threading you through the eye of a needle and you’re experiencing pressure, frustration, and anguish. There is a plan and a purpose—My plan—and that is to create something glorious with your life: a tapestry with deep colors, intricate detail, and beauty, the kind that can only be created through the trying of one’s faith. It’s those difficult and hard-earned lessons that make the tapestry of your life stand apart.

The Heavens Declare

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.—Romans 1:201
*
Many years ago Sir Isaac Newton had an exact replica of our solar system made in miniature. At its center was a large golden ball representing the sun, and revolving around it were smaller spheres attached at the ends of rods of varying lengths. They represented Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and the other planets. These were all geared together by cogs and belts to make them move around the “sun” in perfect harmony. One day as Newton was studying the model, a friend who did not believe in the biblical account of creation stopped by for a visit.

Marveling at the device and watching as the scientist made the heavenly bodies move in their orbits, the man exclaimed, “My, Newton, what an exquisite thing! Who made it for you?” Without looking up, Sir Isaac replied, “Nobody.” “Nobody?” his friend asked. “That’s right! I said nobody! All of these cogs and belts and gears just happened to come together, and wonder of wonders, by chance they began revolving in their set orbits and with perfect timing.”

The unbeliever got the message! It was foolish to suppose that the model merely happened. But it was even more senseless to accept the theory that the Earth and the vast Universe came into being by chance.—Richard W. de Haan
Evidential faith

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.
—Job 38:42
*
There are evidences that establish the reasonableness of faith in God and His existence; yet His existence cannot be established by scientific demonstration. The Bible teaches that people must believe that God is.3 Belief in the existence of God is not based on faith mixed with emotion. People can know that God exists. This knowledge is based on clear and sure revelation. On the other hand, belief in the existence of God is much more reasonable than a denial of God. Atheists claim to be scientific and rational in their denial of God. It can be seen, however, that they are neither scientific nor rational. Atheists have not proved mathematically, or by any scientific experiment, that God does not exist. The very fact that God is a Spirit4 makes this line of approach impossible in the first place.

Not being able to prove or disprove the existence of God by scientific experiment can only be an argument against God’s materiality, not against His existence. There is nothing in the physical world that can disprove the existence of a spiritual being. To be able to disprove the existence of God, people would have to be present everywhere and know all things. If people could possess such powers, they would but demonstrate that they are God, for the possession of such powers is an attribute of Deity.

Faith is based on evidence. People can know that God exists, for the evidence indicates His existence.—W. D. Jeffcoat
*
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.—Psalm 19:1–55
His declaration

When Psalm 19:1 tells us that “the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth His handiwork,” what are the heavens it is referring to? It is talking about not just the atmospheric heavens but the sun, the moon, the stars and constellations. These all declare the glory of God; they glorify the Lord, and show how great and wonderful God is! To declare is to make a statement—the heavens make a statement! In other words, the heavens are showing the glory of God; they’re faithful witnesses to the glory of God.

The Psalm goes on to say, “Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge.” The heavens declare God’s glory, so they glorify Him, because they’re His creation and they show how He made them. They also show His knowledge, the way He organized everything with such intricacy.

In Romans 1, the apostle Paul says that God’s handiwork, His creation, makes a statement: “Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them. For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world”—the invisible things of God, in other words, that there is a God, the fact of His existence even though we can’t see Him—“the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen.”

In other words, by the creation of the world, by looking at the physical creation, it is evident that there must be a Creator. “From the creation of the world these things are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”6

So if people keep an open mind and are willing to receive it, God’s entire creation is speaking and telling us that there is a God. When you look out at the beautiful creation all around us, you know there’s a God. It’s the greatest proof of His existence.

His whole creation is talking. The whole planet is practically yelling, “There’s a loving God who loves you and who created you and created all the world for you to enjoy, and He wants you to love Him!” So “there is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.”7

Wherever there is speech and language, wherever there are people, they should be able to hear the speech and the language of God’s creation, to tell them that there is a God who loves them.—D. Brandt Berg

Why is there something rather than nothing?

“The first question which should rightly be asked,” wrote G. W. F. Leibniz, is “Why is there something rather than nothing?” This question does seem to possess a profound existential force, which has been felt by some of mankind’s greatest thinkers. According to Aristotle, philosophy begins with a sense of wonder about the world, and the most profound question a man can ask concerns the origin of the universe. In his biography of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Norman Malcolm reports that Wittgenstein said that he sometimes had a certain experience which could best be described by saying that “when I have it, I wonder at the existence of the world. I am then inclined to use such phrases as ‘How extraordinary that anything should exist!’” Similarly, one contemporary philosopher remarks, “My mind often seems to reel under the immense significance this question has for me. That anything exists at all does seem to me a matter for the deepest awe.”—William Lane Craig
*
Science supports the notion that the universe had a beginning and that something independent of the universe brought it into being. The well-accepted scientific belief in the universe’s origination and expansion and the second law of thermodynamics (energy tends to spread out) support the universe’s absolute beginning from nothing. This sounds remarkably like Genesis 1:1! The chances of a thing’s popping into being from literally nothing are exactly zero. Being cannot come from non-being; there’s no potential for this. Even skeptic David Hume called this “absurd”—a metaphysical impossibility.—Paul Copan
*
Lord Kelvin (1824–1907), British inventor after whom the absolute scale of temperature is named, is known for his work on the first transatlantic telegraph cable and for formulating the Second Law of Thermodynamics. He said: “The commencement of life upon Earth certainly did not take place by any action of chemistry or electricity or crystalline grouping of molecules. We must pause, face to face with the mystery and miracle of the creation of living creatures.”

For myself, faith begins with a realization that a Supreme Intelligence brought the universe into being and created man. It is not difficult for me to have this faith, for it is incontrovertible that where there is a plan, there is intelligence. An orderly unfolding universe testifies of the truth of the most majestic statement ever uttered: “In the beginning God...”—Dr. Arthur Compton (1892–1962, Nobel Prize winner in physics)

Scientists attempting to harvest human organs in pigs create human-pig embryo

Nicola Davis and Kevin Rawlinson, The Guardian, 6 June 2016

Scientists trying to grow human organs inside pigs in an attempt to tackle a shortage of donors have successfully created part-human, part-pig embryos, it has been reported.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis combined human stem cells and pig DNA and allowed the embryos to mature for 28 days, before terminating the experiment and analysing the tissue.

They believe the animals, which if they had been carried to term would have developed a human internal organ, but would have looked and behaved like any other pig. The goal is that in the future, similar animals could potentially act as a ready source of organs for life-saving transplants.

To create the “chimeric” embryos, the scientists used a gene-editing technique known as Crispr to knock out a section of the pig’s DNA necessary for the embryo to develop a pancreas.

Human induced pluripotent (iPS) stem cells were then injected into the pig embryo. These are cells that have the potential to develop into any tissue type in the resulting foetus. Although genetically foreign, they are not rejected by the pig embryo because its immune system has not yet developed.

Instead the human cells would be expected to follow the chemical cues from the pig embryo to develop into different tissues in the foetus. In most cases they are outcompeted by the pig embryo’s own cells but in the case of the pancreas there are no pig cells to compete with. Hence the embryo goes on to develop a pancreas derived from the injected human cells.

“You are basically creating a vacuum, a hole, so that the human cells respond to the right cues, they make a pancreas. The pig cells can’t. But what we don’t know, and this is what they need to look at, is whether the human cells can also contribute substantially to other tissues, and particularly they are worried about the brain,” said Robin Lovell-Badge, a geneticist at the Francis Crick Institute in London.

It was reported earlier this year that scientists had begun attempts to create the embryos, but there has been opposition from authorities. In September last year, the US National Institutes of Health said it would not back research into “chimeras” until it knew more about the implications.

It cited fears that the presence of human cells could affect the animal’s brain and behaviour, potentially making it more human. Prof Pablo Ross, the reproductive biologist leading the research, sought to calm those fears, saying there was a “very low potential for a human brain to grow”.

It is not the first attempt to create chimeras. Among the previous experiments, scientists using different techniques were able to produce a mouse with a rat’s pancreas, and mice with livers almost completely composed of human cells.

“The whole idea of making chimeras, mixing different animal species or human-animal, has been around for decades,” said Lovell-Badge.

But Peter Stevenson, from Compassion in World Farming, told the BBC’s Panorama programme: “I’m nervous about opening up a new source of animal suffering. Let’s first get many more people to donate organs.”

‘The Faith of Christopher Hitchens’: New Book Recounts Surprising Friendship

By Eric Metaxas, Breakpoint, June 7, 2016

A new book with a provocative title is sending shock waves through both the Christian and atheist communities. In “The Faith of Christopher Hitchens,” writer and commentator Larry Alex Taunton recounts his friendship with one of the most prominent and outspoken atheists–not to mention intellectual giants–of our time.

It’s a story about a deeply remarkable friendship, a story that can teach all of us how to reach past barriers and show what genuine Christian love looks like.

Taunton first met Hitchens in 2008, when, as director of Fixed Point Ministries, he helped to set up a debate between Hitchens and the great Christian Oxford professor John Lennox. At that first meeting, Taunton recalls, “Our rapport was immediate.” Taunton, who had expected to find the author of “God Is Not Great” a bitter, angry man, was surprised to find himself drawn to Hitchens’ humor, thoughtfulness, and honesty.

Hitchens seems to have appreciated the same qualities in Taunton. It was the beginning of a friendship that would find the two men doing more events together, getting to know and like each others’ families, and even taking long car trips together, during which they discussed (among other things) the Gospel of John.

In public, they debated passionately about faith; in private, they often continued the debating, but they also simply enjoyed each other’s company.

Taunton does not gloss over their differences. He had serious reservations about some of Hitchens’ ideas and actions. But as he writes in the prologue to the book, “I speak exclusively to Christians when I say this: how are we to proclaim our faith if we cannot even build bridges with those who do not share it?” Friendship, he goes on to point out, is “one of the greatest of all redemptive themes.” Especially the kind of friendship that he’s describing here: the kind where friends are open with each other and challenge each other.

This friendship was all the stranger because Christopher Hitchens was so famously, fiercely, and sometimes outrageously critical of many Christians. Even Mother Teresa didn’t escape his blistering pen. Whenever he suspected, or even thought he might suspect, a whiff of hypocrisy or deceit, Hitchens pounced.

With Larry Taunton, though, it was different. Hitchens was sincerely impressed by Taunton’s commitment to his faith, and by the behavior inspired by his faith (such as Taunton and his wife adopting an HIV-positive little girl from Ukraine). His respect led Hitchens to defend Taunton and their friendship against other atheists.

“The truth is,” Taunton writes, “there were those who did not want us to be friends.” Sadly, he’s referring to Christians as well as atheists. It can be so hard for us to accept that people with such radically different beliefs can form connections; we’re terrified that such connections may lead us to water down our convictions. But for Taunton and Hitchens, it was just the opposite. In “The Faith of Christopher Hitchens,” you’ll see how their friendship made both of them better people.
