More Pro-Life Demonstrators Arrested

Amid accusations that it is targeting pro-lifers to silence and intimidate, the Justice Department has charged 11 more pro-life activists with violations of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act for blocking the entrance of an abortion clinic in 2021.

The 11 activists were charged with FACE Act violations stemming from their 2021 “blockade” of an abortion clinic in Mount Juliet, Tennessee. This blockade was peaceful, pro-life activist AJ Hurley told The Daily Signal on Wednesday evening.

Several of the activists were arrested on the day of the blockade, after reportedly successfully preventing abortions from taking place at the clinic for most of the day, but police reportedly released these activists later in the day after they posted bail for misdemeanor charges, the pro-life news outlet Live Action reported.

In a Wednesday press release, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee announced that Chester Gallagher, 73, of Lebanon, Tennessee; Heather Idoni, 58, of Michigan; Calvin Zastrow, 57, of Michigan; Caroline Davis, 24, of Michigan; Coleman Boyd, 51, of Bolton, Mississippi; Dennis Green, 56, of Cumberland, Virginia; and Paul Vaughn, 55, of Centerville, Tennessee, are charged with “conspiracy against rights secured by the FACE Act, and committing FACE Act violations.”

Hurley, a pro-life activist who is friends with many of those charged on Wednesday, told The Daily Signal that the FBI raided Gallagher’s home on Wednesday morning with “guns drawn.” Hurley was not physically present but said he was alerted to the alleged raid by his friends.

“He happened to be in South Carolina, but the neighbors reported and then [the FBI] ended up coming to talk to the neighbors to get his cellphone number, to find out where he was,” Hurley said. “He was in South Carolina, immediately offered to turn himself in to the U.S. Marshals’ office, which they said he could turn himself in tomorrow, so he’ll be turning himself in tomorrow morning.”

Eva Edl, 87, of Aiken South Carolina; Eva Zastro, 24, of Dover, Arkansas; James Zastro, 25, of Eldon, Missouri; and Paul Place, 24, of Centerville, Tennessee, are all charged with committing FACE Act violations as well, the DOJ release said.

Gallagher reportedly used social media to promote pro-life events scheduled for March 2021 in the Nashville area. His fellow pro-life activists, which the Justice Department release calls “co-conspirators,” used “Facebook to coordinate travel and logistics and to identify other participants for the blockade.”

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Signal as to whether it provided intelligence related to the charges filed.

“On March 4, 2021, Coleman Boyd and Chester Gallager advertised the blockade of the Carafem Health Center Clinic, in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, which was planned for the following day,” the release said. “In his social media post, Gallagher referred to the blockade as a ‘rescue.’ Boyd also began a Facebook livestream broadcast of the clinic blockade at 7:45 a.m. on March 5, 2021.”

Hurley explained that a “rescue” means “to forfeit one’s own well-being in a peaceful attempt to save innocent life by placing oneself in between a victim and an oppressor.”

The release continued: “This livestream broadcast was titled, in part, ‘Mt. Juliet, TN Rescue March 5, 2021,’ and livestreamed the blockade event as his coconspirators and others blocked the clinic’s entry doors and prevented a patient and an employee from entering. The livestream also broadcast members of the group attempting to engage a patient and her companion as Boyd told his livestream audience that the patient was a ‘mom coming to kill her baby.’”

On March 5, 2021, according to the release, the pro-life activists, “aided and abetted by one another, used force and physical obstruction to injure, intimidate, and interfere with employees of the clinic and a patient who was seeking reproductive health services.”

If the pro-life activists are convicted, those charged with conspiracy could spend 11 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000, while the others face up to a year in prison and fines of up to $10,000.

The news comes amid national outcry over the dramatic arrest of Mark Houck, a Catholic father and pro-life activist who was reportedly dramatically arrested by armed FBI agents in front of his family for allegedly pushing a pro-abortion activist who allegedly harassed his son.

Neither the FBI nor the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee immediately responded to requests for comment from The Daily Signal.

Don’t Waste Your Cancer

Don't Waste Your Cancer -
John Piper

I heard of a seminary student who asked his professor how many points a sermon should have. The professor said, ...”At least one.” Well, the Lord has lead me to “10 points”!

At my last visit to the Proton treatment center, I found a booklet titled, “Don’t Waste Your Cancer”. Not only the title caught my attention, but the author did as well: John Piper! It was written 2-15-06. For those of you who may not know Piper, he is a well-respected Bible teacher & scholar. The text that follows is based on Piper’s booklet & is used by permission. (By the way, there was just one copy…. Left for me!!)

Piper says, “I write this on the eve of prostate surgery. I believe in God’s power to heal-by miracle and by medicine. I believe it is right and good to pray for both kinds of healing. Cancer is not wasted when it is healed by God. He gets the glory and that is why cancer exists. So not to pray for healing may waste your cancer…. I am praying for myself and for you that we will not waste this pain.”

1. You will waste your cancer if you do not believe it is designed for you by God. It will not do to say that God only uses our cancer but does not design it. What God permits, he permits for a reason. And that reason is his design. If God forsees molecular developments becoming cancer, he can stop it or not. If he does not, he has a purpose….
a. The reality of God’s design brings out and channels our honest outcry to the One Who
cares. God’s design invites honest speech, rather than silencing us into resignation.
b. When there is a need, cry out to the One Who cares; Ps.28:1,2, “To you I call, O Lord my Rock; do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I will be like those who have gone down to the pit. Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help... v.6, Praise be to the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and my shield…”
c. When Habakkuk was faced with the reality of God’s judgment on Israel, and the fact that he too would suffer in that judgment, he declared 3:17-18, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord I will be joyful in God my Savior.”
d. The particulars of your situation may not include cancer… PLEASE, replace the word "cancer” with whatever crisis you may be facing. The principle is the same: call upon the One Who cares… know that your circumstance is not accidental… ask for insight into your situation, and realize that God is working out His plan for you & in you.

2. You will waste your cancer if you believe it is a curse and not a gift.
a. In His beloved children our Father works a most kind good through our most grievous losses: sometimes healing and restoring… always sustaining and teaching us that we might know and love him more simply.
b. Jas.1:2-5, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must
finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
c. 1Pet.1:6, “In all this (our blessings of new birth in Christ) you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

3. You will waste your cancer if you seek comfort from your odds rather than from God.
a. The design of God in your cancer is not to train you in the rationalistic, human calculation of
odds.
b. Re-phrasing Ps 20:7, Piper says “Some count their chariots (percentages of survival) and some count their horses (side effects of treatment) but we trust in the name of the Lord our God”!
c. The hymn, “Be Still My Soul” reckons the odds right: we are 100% certain to suffer, and Christ is 100% certain to meet us, to come for us, comfort us, & restore Love’s purest joys.

4. You will waste your cancer if you refuse to think about death.
a. We will die, if Jesus postpones His return. Not to think about what it will be like to leave
this life and meet God is folly.
b. Eccl. 7:2, “It is better to go to a house of mourning (a funeral) than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart.”
c. Ps. 90:12, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Numbering
our days means thinking about how few there are…
d. Someone has said, “Cancer is one “downpayment” on inevitable death, giving one bad taste of the reality of our mortality. It is the last enemy we must face, but Christ has defeated this
last enemy! It has no final power if you are a child of God, so you can look it in the eye!

5. You will waste your cancer if you think that “beating” cancer means staying alive rather than
cherishing Christ.
a. Satan’s and God’s designs in your cancer are not the same. Satan designs to destroy your love for Christ. God designs to deepen your love for Christ.
b. Cancer does not win if you die. It wins if you fail to cherish Christ. It (cancer) is meant to help you say and feel, Phil.3:8, “What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ… 1:21, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (underline & italics, mine!)
c. Cherishing Christ expresses the two core activities of faith: dire need… & utter joy.

6. You will waste your cancer if you spend too much time reading about cancer and not enough
time reading about God.
a. It is not wrong to study about or to know about cancer. Ignorance is not a virtue. But to strive for more knowledge of cancer, while at the same time having a lack of zeal to know God more and more is symptomatic of a lack of unbelief! It is meant to awaken us to the truth of Dan. 11:32, “The people who know their God shall stand firm and take action.”
b. Other people will often express their care and concern by inquiring about your health.
That’s good but the conversation easily gets stuck there. So tell them openly about your
sickness, seeking their prayers and counsel, but then change the direction of conversation by telling them what your God is doing to faithfully sustain you. Robert Murray McCheyne said wisely said “For every look at your sins (cancer) take ten looks at
Christ.”
c. For every hour you spend researching or discussing your cancer… spend 10 hours
researching, and discussing and serving your Lord.

7. You will waste your cancer if you let it drive you into solitude instead of deepen your
relationships with manifest affection.
a. When Epaphroditus brought the gifts to Paul (sent by the Philippian church) he became
ill and almost died. Paul tells the Philippians, “He has been longing for you all and has
been distressed because you heard that he was ill”, 2:26,27. What an amazing response! It does not say they were distressed that he was ill, but that he was
distressed because they heard he was ill. That is the kind of heart God is aiming to create with cancer; a deeply affectionate, caring heart for people. Don’t waste your cancer by retreating into yourself!

8. You will waste your cancer if you grieve as those who have no hope.
a. Related to loved ones dying, Paul wrote, 1 Thess. 4:13, “We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.”
b. There is always grief at death, but it should be different for believers. Our grief should be “permeated with hope.”
c. Grief that has no hope often chooses denial or escape or busyness because it can’t face reality without becoming distraught.
d. We follow in the image of the One who was “a man of sorrows acquainted with grief”.
The One Who “for the joy set before him” willingly chose the cross.
e. From John 15-17, “My joy will be in you and your joy will be made full… Your grief will be turned to joy… No one will take your joy away from you… These things I speak in the world, so that they may have my joy made full in themselves.”

9. You will waste your cancer if you treat sin as casually as before.
a. Are your besetting sins as attractive as they were before you had cancer? Cancer is designed to destroy the appetite for sin… pride; greed; lust; unforgiveness; impatience; (certainly the list could go on & on!).
b. these things are worse enemies than cancer!
c. Let the presence of eternity make the sins of time look as futile as they really are.
d. “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself.” Lk.9:25.
e. Will you become more bitter, despairing, addictive, fearful, frenzied…? Will you pretend
it’s business as usual?
f. If you are God’s, suffering in Christ’s hands will change you… you come to terms with life
and death on His terms.
g. Your inner enemy- a mora cancer 10,000 times more deadly than your physical cancer wil be dying as you continue seeking and finding your Savior.
h. Ps.25, “For your name’s sake O Lord, pardon my iniquity, for it is very great. Who is the man who fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way he should choose.”
10. You will waste your cancer if you fail to use it as a means of witness to the truth and glory of God.
a. Christians are never anywhere by divine accident. There are reasons for why we wind
up where we do.
b. Consider what Jesus said about painful, unplanned circumstances: Lk.21:12,13, “They
will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. v.13, And so you will bear testimony to me. (v. 13, ESV, “This will be your opportunity to bear witness”.)
c. And so it is with cancer… your opportunity to bear witness… to show that Christ is infinitely worthy… & worth more than life itself!
d. DON’T WASTE IT!
e. And as Piper ends his booklet, “In your cancer (or trying circumstance-parenthesis mine), you will need your brothers and sisters to witness to the truth and glory of Christ,
to walk with you, to live out their faith beside you, to love you. And you can do same
with them and with all others, becoming the heart that loves with the love of Christ, the
mouth filled with hope to both friends and strangers.

He's Always There!

 by Maria Fontaine

I find great comfort and inspiration in a beautiful poem by Annie Johnson Flint written in 1919 entitled “What God Hath Promised.” Before reading the poem, I thought it would be helpful to reflect a bit on her life story.

Early in Annie’s life, arthritis began to show itself. She saw several doctors, but it steadily grew worse until it became difficult for her to walk at all. She was obliged to give up her work as a teacher.

Picture, if you can, the hopelessness of Annie’s position when later she finally received the verdict of the doctors of the Clifton Springs Sanitarium that henceforth she would be a helpless invalid.

Although crippled, she did not consider herself helpless and that she could do nothing but bemoan her lot. She believed that God had laid her aside for a purpose, even though that purpose was obscure to her at times. She also believed that He had work for her to do, and she put her very best into the writing of her poems, rendering this ministry unto Him.

The result has been that her verses have an unusually deep appeal to human hearts. Out of the crucible of suffering, she was able to administer that comfort to others wherewith she herself had been comforted of God.

For more than 40 years there was scarcely a day when she did not suffer pain. For 37 years she became increasingly helpless. Her joints had become rigid, although she was able to turn her head, and in great pain write a few lines on paper.

No one but God and she knew what suffering she endured as the disease became worse with the passing of years and new complications developed. But through it all, her faith in the goodness and mercy of God never wavered. There were many times, no doubt, when her soul would be burdened with the mystery of it all and why she was called to endure such suffering. In that respect she was human like the rest of us, but the marvelous thing is that her faith never faltered, and that she was at all times able to say, “Thy will be done.”—Rowland V. Bingham1

What God Hath Promised

God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.

God hath not promised we shall not know
Toil and temptation, trouble and woe;
He hath not told us we shall not bear
many a burden, many a care.

God hath not promised smooth roads and wide,
Swift, easy travel, needing no guide;
Never a mountain rocky and steep,
Never a river turbid and deep.

But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing sympathy, undying love.

We know that God has promised to keep us and that in keeping His promise there is nothing too hard for Him.

Jesus doesn’t necessarily take all our troubles away. In fact, He often doesn’t. Instead, in His love, He always sees the beauty to be brought from the ashes, the wisdom to be brought from the failure, the strength to be gained from the weakness, and the joy that the sorrows of the night seasons will bring in the morning.

He walks through our troubles and struggles with us, helping us to gain the good things that His absolute power and love can bring out of even the worst hardships and suffering. He said, “With men, it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27).

His promises come to life in the hard times. In times of struggle or suffering or grief, His promises become more clearly the foundation of our prayers.

Something that stands out to me throughout the Bible is the importance of giving thanks. Jesus can bring the greatest good from any situation for His children. Praise is the voice of faith, and when we express our faith by praising and thanking Him, it expresses our trust in Him that we will receive the answer to our prayers that He knows is best.

I’d like to share a few of the verses on God’s power in times of trouble that my husband and I often claim for others and ourselves in our prayer times. Perhaps this will be a starting point for you to add more of your own favorite verses that speak to your heart in a special way. Even when we can’t remember the entire verse, we can claim a key phrase from it.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.—Philippians 4:6–7

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.—Psalm 55:22

The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.—1 John 4:4

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.—Romans 8:38–39

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him.—1 John 5:14–15

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.—Hebrews 4:16

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.—Joshua 1:9

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.—Isaiah 54:10

Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.—Psalm 119:165

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.”—Isaiah 43:2

Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.—Jeremiah 32:17

“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?”—Jeremiah 32:27

For nothing will be impossible with God.—Luke 1:37

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.—Philippians 4:13

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.—Philippians 4:19

God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?—Numbers 23:19

And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.—Romans 8:28

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”—John 16:33

“Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”—John 16:24

“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours be done.”—Luke 22:42
