Growing in Our Walk with God

Over the last couple of months, I’ve really tried to put God first every morning. And it has made all the difference in the world. Taking time with God first thing in the morning is powerful and important. The time we spend with Him prepares us to take on anything that comes our way that day, good or bad.


I’ve found that trying to manage my day without committing my day to the Lord in prayer first is like trying to drive a car without suspension. Automotive experts tell us that’s not a good idea.—Not only will the ride be bumpy, but the car will be unstable and difficult to steer.

Starting our day with the Lord gives us a fresh, gratitude-filled perspective for the entire day. Not only does it change our day, it eventually changes our whole life. It helps us to trust Jesus with everything that comes our way.

Keep in mind, too, that God is not some distant supernatural being advising us from afar off. He wants a relationship with each of us that is personal and intimate. In fact, He’s promised that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us (James 4:8).

Granted, this is not always easy. Life hits us with tons of distractions and to-dos. So many activities can easily take up all our time—children, work, life responsibilities, the internet and social media, even church activities. At times, it seems that the last thing we could possibly think of is taking time to commune with God.

Maybe it’s time to reorder our priorities. If we neglect taking time with God, we’ll be taking a car ride without the benefit of suspension, and we’ll be less prepared to deal with the bumps and jolts of life. So, whatever it takes, let’s make time to be alone with God.

Having a few ideas to start with can be helpful. Instead of starting with my prayer requests, I begin with praising God. Reading the Bible or an entry from a devotional book and singing a song of praise is a great way to start. After that, I write in my gratitude journal at least five things I’m thankful for from the previous day.

Lately, I’ve started to realize that, just like in any other relationship, there needs to be two-way communication. I can’t just say what I want to say without also listening to the other person. The same is true of the Lord. He often has something He wants to say as well if we will listen. So often, if I just get quiet, a Bible verse or some words of comfort and encouragement will come to mind. It may be just a sentence or two or three. But that’s enough. It’s beautiful and comforting and gives me the perspective I need for the day ahead or guidance for something specific that’s troubling me.

Remember, God wants our fellowship. He has done everything He can to make that happen. He has forgiven our sins at the cost of His own Son. He has given us His Word, as well as the priceless privilege of spending time with Him. So, let’s make it a priority! Let’s put God first!

I open the door of my heart to You. Please fill me with Your Holy Spirit and help me live in a way that glorifies You. Guide my life and help me to follow You. In Your name I pray. Amen.

Memorizaba las Escrituras para recordar lo que Dios había dicho sobre un tema determinado.

Jesús mismo dijo: «Si permanecéis en mi palabra, conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres» [Juan 8:31-32]. He intentado «permanecer en su palabra» leyendo la Biblia a diario y tratando de aplicarla a mi vida. En los salmos leemos: «Con tus mandamientos me has hecho más sabio que mis enemigos, porque tus palabras siempre están conmigo». Más que todos mis enseñadores he entendido, Porque tus testimonios son mis meditaciones. Entiendo más que los antiguos, porque guardo tus preceptos. [Salmos 119:98-100] He procurado seguir el consejo de Dios y hacer de su Palabra mi mediación. Su Palabra ha sido lámpara a mis pies y lumbrera a mi camino, [Salmos 119:105] una luz que brilla cada día con más claridad. [Proverbios 4:18]

Por favor, busca un Nuevo Testamento si puedes y siéntate a leerlo sin distracciones. El apóstol Pedro dijo que más grande que sus propias experiencias personales con Jesús era el testimonio de que Dios habla a través de su Palabra escrita. Por favor, léelo hasta que la estrella de la mañana amanezca en tu corazón y entiendas. Si estuvieras perdido en una noche oscura y lúgubre y vieras una luz distante, aunque fuera tenue, irías hacia ella. [2 Pedro 1:19] Esa luz es la Palabra de Dios. Ve hacia ella y encuentra el tesoro escondido en ella. "Porque conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres." [Juan 8:32] Y A quien el Hijo libere, será verdaderamente libre. [Juan 8:36]

"Yet even so, truth is very beautiful; more so, as I consider, than justice - today’s pursuit – which easily puts on a false face. In the nearly seven decades I have lived through, the world has overflowed with bloodshed and explosions whose dust has never had time to settle before others have erupted; all in purportedly just causes. The quest for justice continues, and the weapons and the hatred pile up; but truth was an early casualty. The lies on which our wars have been fought and our peace treaties concluded. The lies of revolution and counter-revolution! The lies of advertising, of news, of salesmanship, of politics. The lies of the priests in the pulpit, the professor at his podium, the journalist at his typewriter! The lie stuck like a fishbone in the throat of the microphone, the hand-held lies of the prowling cameraman.

"Ignazio Salone told me once how, when he was a member of the old Comintern (in Moscow during the USSR), some stratagem was under discussion, and a delegate, a newcomer who had never attended before, made the extraordinary observation that if such and such a statement were to be put out, it would not be true. Truth has indeed suffered an attempted assassination, but the announcement of her death was premature. Truth is alive and well to those who seek for it. Truth, by definition, means objective truth, not today's "true for you, but not for me." Truth is not relative. Truth is true whether or not you and I believe it, whether or not anyone believes it.  As a young college student I decided in my freshman year to make "truth" my educational goal, so I sought for truth. I studied history, religion, politics, philosophy, psychology, literature, music, art; in search of truth. From my studies and my life experiences, I came to the conclusion that the greatest truth was love. But what, or whom, or where was the source of real sacrificial love? What, or whom, or where was the source of the power of love?

My search for truth led me to the arms of Jesus who said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to God the Father, but by me."[John 14:6] To find out who Jesus was, I did not go off to seminary college or go down to the local church. Instead, I started reading the New Testament and tried to implement what I was reading in my own life. When I read, "Go sell all that thou has and give to the poor, and come and follow Me,"[Matthew 19:21] that's what I did. For many years I refused to read anything but God's Word. I memorized Scriptures to help me remember what God had said on a given subject.

Jesus Himself said, "If you continue in my Word, you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."[John 8:31-32] I have tried to "continue in His word" by daily reading from the Bible and trying to apply it to my life. In the psalms we read, "Thou through Thy commandments has made me wiser than my enemies: for Thy words are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for Thy testimonies are my meditations. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Thy precepts."[Psalms 119:98-100] I have tried to followed the counsel of God and made His Word my mediation. His Word has been a  lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path [Psalms 119:105], a light that shiners clearer and clearer every day.[Proverbs 4:18]

Please find yourself a New Testament if you can and sit down and read it without distraction. The Apostle Peter said that greater than his own personal experiences with Jesus was the testimony that God speaks through His written Word. Please read it until that day star arises in your heart and you understand. If you were lost on a dark and dreary night and you saw a distant light, ever so faint, you would go towards it.[2 Peter 1:19] That light is God's Word. Go to it and find the treasure hidden therein. "For you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."[ John 8:32] And whom the Son shall make free, shall be free indeed.[John 8:36]
