Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg? by Dennis Edwards

By Dennis Edwards:

What do you think? Are you a chicken or egg believer? Or do you think the question can’t be answered? I believe, if you have thought your world view through, you should have an answer. Think about it for a few minutes before we go forward and see if you can come to a conclusion. Which beginning story makes more sense to you, a chicken or an egg?

After giving it some thought maybe you have come to the conclusion, like many others, that the only correct answer can be “an egg.” Hasn’t science shown that the first life, the first cell or “egg,” formed in a primordial soup 3.5 billion years ago and modern man is evolution’s fine-tuning? I think we can soundly conclude that modern science would seem to indicate that “an egg” is the correct answer to the proverbial chicken & egg question. Because, really, we are asking the question of beginnings, how did it all start? Science has concluded that life began when a lightning bolt brought together some chemicals forming the first cell or living organism long ago. But does that story really “hold water?” Could a lightning bolt really have changed chemicals into amino acids, the precursors of proteins needed for the first life form? We have the famous Stanley Miller experiment which seemed to indicate that it could. Isn’t that what we are taught in our science books and biology classes? Amino acids can form naturally under the right circumstances. But let’s take a look at some of the more recent studies in science and see if they sit squarely with the evolutionary assumptions.

First we will look at an argument articulated in the book "Evolution the Grand Experiment." Dr. Carl Werner notes that first we need to understand what components are necessary for the first living cell. Very simply put, the essential compounds for life to exist are DNA, proteins and a cell membrane. All living organism from bacteria to man are composed of these elements. DNA contains the genetic information for the forming and reproducing of the organism. Proteins provide the chemical catalyst and structure of the cell. The cell membrane holds it all together. DNA carries the information for the forming of the proteins of the cell and passes the same information on to the next generation cell. It is an instruction book for how to make the cell. The information in DNA could not arise naturally, as all sophisticated information has an intelligent agent or mind as its source.

Another problem is that DNA makes proteins and is itself made up of proteins. How is that possible? DNA information is needed to design and make proteins and yet DNA itself is made up of proteins? We have another chicken and egg problem.

Dr. Werner has calculated that the minimum amount of DNA letters needed to make the first single-celled organism would be 18,000 DNA letters. Scientists have observed DNA forming naturally in the laboratory up to 20 letters but it then begins to break down. The needed 18,000 letters must be in a specific order to convey the information necessary to form the cell for life to begin. It is very specific information, not just random letters. Werner calculated the mathematical possibility of getting those letters in the right order by chance, like evolution proposes. The chance is 1 out of 1,201 followed by 10, 837 zeros. The chance of winning the national lottery every day for 365 days in a row is 1 out of 4,244 followed by 2,881 zeros.

Conclusion: a naturally forming first-cell is mathematically impossible. That is why famous evolutionary mathematician and astronomer Sir Fredrick Hoyle said, “The likelihood of the formation of life from inanimate matter is one to a number with 40,000 zeros after it. It is big enough to bury Darwin and the whole General Theory of Evolution. There was no primordial soup, neither on this planet nor any other, and if the beginnings of life were not random, they must, therefore, have been the product of purposeful intelligence.” Hoyle concluded that the first life needed to have been seeded by some alien intelligence. Evolutionists just do not want to accept God into their worldview.

Let’s go back and pick up on another aspect of the problem which we vaguely touched on, the information problem. Information theorist Dr.Werner Gitt explains that when we find information we always conclude it has been formed by an intelligent mind. If we found the words “John loves Mary” written in the sand on the beach, we conclude that an intelligent person wrote the message. We don’t for a moment postulate that the moving of the waves over millions of years may have naturally formed the message. Nor would we think that seagulls, or turtles, or some stray dogs playing on the beach accidentally wrote the message. We assume correctly from our past experience that an intelligent mind formed the message.

Whenever we see sophisticated information like the above sentence, we conclude it was formed by an intelligent mind. The whole SETI experiment, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence is based on the idea that if we can listen and receive an intelligent message from outer space, that would prove we are not alone in universe. Yet the amount of information found in the DNA molecule is mind boggling. Just a pinhead of DNA it has been calculated is sufficient to make enough books that if they were placed one on top of another you could make a pile of books from the earth to the moon 500 times. Yet scientists argue that DNA must have formed naturally because, as evolutionist Professor of Genetics Richard Lewontin confessed, “We take the side of evolutionary science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community for unsubstantiated just so stories, because we have a prior commitment to materialism, that materialism is absolute for we cannot allow a divine foot in the door.”

We could also talk about how natural selection does not add new genetic information to the genome. Natural selection in fact deletes information in order to make the organism more highly selected for a particular natural habitat. Natural selection does account for the variation within a certain kind of animal, like the over 1000 different varieties of dogs. But natural selection does not change a reptile into a bird. When natural selection does take place, genetic information is deleted.

We could talk about the inability of mutations to add new genetic information. Mutations also can cause variation in a type of organism. But mutations are not capable of changing the organism into a completely different organism even over millions of years of time. Like Dr. Wildersmith has said, “The chemistry of mutations in the genetic code has an effect similar to that of water on a text. Mutations modify or destroy already existing genetic information, but they never create new information, they never create an entirely new biological organ. Herein lays the error of New Darwinism which teaches that fundamentally new information is created by mutations.” Neither natural selection nor mutations are mechanisms for adding new genetic information. New genetic information is a must for vertical evolution or molecules to man evolution to take place. Michael Pitman has commented that “neither observation nor controlled experimentation has shown natural selection manipulating mutations so as to produce a new gene, hormone, enzyme or organ.”

There is no mechanism for macro evolution, the slow process of molecules to man evolution, to take place. Evolutionists always use examples of variation within a type as their “proofs” of “evolution” taking place. These “proofs” are then magically extrapolated upon by adding millions of years of time to make the changes that neither natural selection nor mutations are capable of making. Time is the great magician.

But rather than go through those arguments any further, I would like to touch on another argument made by Dr. Greg Bahnsen called the transcendental argument. Dr. Bahnsen argues that we all have presuppositions which we bring to the table in any situation. The idea of the “objectively neutral” scientist is a misnomer. Everyone has presuppositions, our belief system, which in effect, monitors or controls the way we process the world around us. Two scientists looking at the very same evidence or “fact” can come to two totally different conclusions. An atheist will look at the Grand Canyon and see “a slow process over millions of years” while a Bible believing scientist will see sediments laid down rapidly by water over a short period of time related to the affects of Noah’s flood.

Presuppositions affect how scientists interpret the scientific information. The evidence does not speak for itself. The rocks do not have dates on them. Even the dating methods that assure us that the rocks are “millions of years old” are formed by scientists with “millions of years” presuppositions. In other words, before they look for a method to prove “millions of years” they are already sure that “millions of years” exist. They are merely looking for a method of dating that can confirm their belief system.

In the past, scientists have made the same mistake. One example is the famous experiment by the Dutch scientist confirming Aristotle’s belief that life started spontaneously. He placed some wheat in a bowl with dirty underwear and noted that two weeks later mice had evolved. What surprised him was that they were adult mice. But none the less it was a confirming experiment to prove the then widely held belief that life started spontaneously. His assumption was that life started spontaneously. Afterward he found an experiment that confirmed his belief system and herald it as proof.

Bahnsen’s argument looks at the preconditions for intelligibility and concludes that only the Christian Biblical worldview is logically consistence and coherent. Let’s take a more in-depth look at the argument.

Bahnsen says that our beliefs must be based on reasonable assumptions and not just arbitrary ones. An arbitrary belief is one that does not have adequate reasons to support it. Our beliefs can be compared to the roof of a building. The roof must be held up by sufficiently strong walls. If the walls are not strong enough to hold the roof, the roof comes down. Arbitrary beliefs do not have sufficient reasons to be believed. Beliefs may have reasons, but the reasons must be sufficient to hold up the belief. To believe that the earth is held up by a muscular man called Atlas is an arbitrary belief. There are not enough reasonable arguments for one to believe that “Atlas” in deed exists.

In the same way, to say that the universe, the laws of nature, and life itself are all the result of an inexpiable accident is insufficient wall mass to hold up the roof, the assumption that the existing universe with its natural laws and life itself created itself.

How can an atheistic, evolutionary, materialistic, naturalistic world view account for the laws of logic, the uniformity in nature and objective morality which we find in life? Why would we expect laws of logic in an atheistic world resulting from an non-caused unguided beginning, a result of a random accident? The laws of logic are universal. They are immaterial. An atheist cannot give good reason why they are true and where they come from. But the Biblical Christian has the God of the Bible who said he made man in His image. He has said, “Come and let us reason together.” Therefore we conclude that the laws of logic are a reflection of how a reasonable, universal, immaterial God thinks.

Likewise, though evolutionists try to produce just so stories for why morality exists, none of them are sufficient coherent and conclusive to hold up the truth that objective morality does exist. Where does conscience come from? Why do we each have that little voice in our head telling us to do good and not to do evil? Again, only the God of the Bible who said he had placed His law in our hearts and minds is sufficient reason for the existence of objective morality. An honest atheist said to me the other day, “The one thing I cannot explain is the voice of conscience. Where does it come from? That’s one thing that bothers me.” It should bother him, because it screams out that his worldview is irrational.

How can an atheist explain the uniformity in nature or the belief that tomorrow will be like today, or that the future will resemble the past? He can only assume that the future will be like the past, but he has never been in the future and made observations or experiments there. Therefore how can he be sure of what the future will be like, especially since he believes the universe itself is a result of a random non-caused cause and that the evolution of life is an unplanned, unguided process? His belief in the uniformity of nature does not follow logically from his assumptions of how and why the universe was created in the first place. But the Christian has God’s Word for it. God has said that while the earth remains tomorrow would be like today for by Him all things consist and are upheld by the Word of His power.

What about the assumption we make that our sensory mechanisms relay to our minds reality. In an atheistic non-caused unguided accidental universe why should we expect our sensory mechanism to give correct information to our minds? Like C.S.Lewis said “If the solar system was brought about by an accidental collision, then the appearance of organic life on this planet was also an accident, and the whole evolution of Man was an accident too. If so, then all our present thoughts are mere accidents - the accidental by-product of the “movement of atoms. And this holds for the thoughts of the materialists and astronomers as well as for anyone else's. But if their thoughts - i.e., Materialism and Astronomy - are mere accidental by-products, why should we believe them to be true? I see no reason for believing that one accident should be able to give me a correct account of all the other accidents. It's like expecting the accidental shape taken by the splash when you upset a milk-jug should give you a correct account of how the jug was made and why it was upset.” Why should we expect our minds to be able to process sensory information correctly to enable us to think and to make sound judgments if we are a result of an non-caused accident with no purpose or design?

The assumption that our sensory perceptions are relaying reality to our minds is a precondition for intelligibility. But in an evolutionary atheistic naturalistic materialistic worldview, why would we expect to have and find this precondition? Where does it come from? The atheist does not have sufficient reason for his belief. It is therefore arbitrary and illogical. However, the Biblical Christian has God’s Word that He has made man in His image. Therefore we would expect that our body and minds would work in a reasonable fashion. Only the Biblical Christian worldview can account for these preconditions for intelligibility. Only the Christian worldview is logical and reasonable.

In conclusion, we have seen that the evolutionary idea that the egg formed first and slowly evolved into a chicken is false. We have seen that God’s Word gives us sufficient reasons for the preconditions for intelligibility. God’s Word gives us the reasons for the existence of the laws of logic. God’s Word gives us the reasons for the uniformity in nature. God’s Word gives us the reasons for objective morality. God’s Word gives us reasons for believing that our sensory mechanism and brain function coherently and intelligibly. God’s Word gives us reasons for the forming of the universe and the first life forms on earth and the massive amount of information in the DNA. Our belief in God is shown to be reasonable and not arbitrary. God’s Word is shown to be true. God’s Word also tells us that He made the male rooster and female hen first, completely mature. We can conclude with authority from God’s Word that the chicken came first, not the egg. God’s Word says so. God is the author of our beginnings, not evolution!

Winds in the House of Islam

BreakPoint, February 10, 2014

Terrorist attacks, the threat of nuclear weapons, persecution of Christians, the abuse of women—these are just some of the recurring themes whenever the American news media get around to covering the Muslim world—which isn’t often. It’s enough to tempt you to think that the House of Islam is beyond redemption or hope.

Well, I’m thrilled to tell you that God is doing miraculous things in the House of Islam. David Garrison, a missions expert with the Southern Baptists, has written an amazing new book called “A Wind in the House of Islam,” which describes an unprecedented movement of Muslims into the Christian faith over the last twenty years.

Upon hearing the increasing stories of conversions recently in the Islamic world, David went on a journey of 250,000 miles to speak with Muslims in West Africa, North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Persian world, South Asia, and the Indo-Malaysia archipelago, asking them the fundamental question, “What did God use to bring you to faith in Jesus Christ?”

His research uncovered that in the fourteen hundred years since Muhammad founded Islam, there have been eighty-two movements of Muslims turning to Christ. As a starting point, he defined “movement” as 1000 Muslims receiving Christian baptism, a public statement of their faith in Christ.

Now 82 movements in 1400 years doesn’t sound like a lot. But David Garrison points out an amazing fact—84 percent of those movements have started in just the last 20 years!

“We’re seeing a moment in salvation history,” Garrison claims, “that we’ve never seen before in the history of Christianity’s interaction with the House of Islam.”

In many cases, Garrison notes, the Lord is using dreams and visions of Jesus Christ to overcome old barriers and reach Muslim hearts. Those dreams are often followed up by a Christian who points the seeking to the gospel.

When I asked Garrison why God might be giving more dreams to Muslims today, his answer was sobering: “My fear,” he said, “is that they may have been having dreams and visions for fourteen centuries, but there was no one there to tell them who Jesus was, no one there to give them a New Testament in their own language to share with them the good news that God loves Muslims.”

Why You Need to Put Your Brain on a Fitness Plan, Too

By Sandra Bond Chapman, PhD, Yahoo Shine, Feb 7, 2014

Most people don’t consider their brain health until they’re faced with injury, disease, or simply getting old. But just as we’ve come to realize that we can improve our physical health through diet and exercise, we can improve our cognitive health too. It’s simply a matter of engaging in the right mental workouts.

Science now strongly supports the fact that our brains are one of the most modifiable parts of our whole body. Our brains actually adapt from moment to moment, depending on how we use them; they either decline or improve, and which direction they go depends on us and the way we challenge them.

Our research team at the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas is working on how to improve brain performance at all ages, and our findings show that making our brains stronger, healthier, and more productive requires actually changing the way we use them every single day. And that’s where daily changes come in. We all must first abandon toxic habits that are depleting brain resources, and also incorporate complex thinking into our daily routines. Ready to make your brain smarter? Here are a few scientifically proven ways to do it.

Quiet Your Mind. “Don’t make any rash decisions!” Somewhere along the line, we’ve all been given that advice, and it actually applies to your brain too, which can often better solve complex problems when you step away to reflect on ideas and crucial decisions rather than acting without weighing choices. A halt in constant thinking slows your mind’s rhythms, allowing it to refresh. Employ a “Five by Five” principle where you take a break from whatever you’re doing five times a day for at least five minutes to reset your brain. When we let our brain work behind the scenes, we have our best “aha” moments. And don’t we all want more of those?

Translate Your World. Move away from surface-level, uninspired thinking and eschew predictable thoughts by pushing past the obvious and really think. For example, when asked what a movie was about, most people would give a play-by-play of events that occurred. To boost brainpower, instead think of the major themes of the film and relate it to personal situations in your own life and how they apply. Think back on one of your favorite movies or books from the past year and generate five to eight different take-home messages you can glean from it.

This process, called synthesized thinking, strengthens the connections between different areas of our brains. Our brains actually become quickly jaded by routine since they were built to dynamically shift between details and the big picture. They also hate information downloading, so it helps to think like a reporter. When taking in large amounts of information, try to explain it in a few sentences. Kick off meetings with provocative big ideas. Power your important email messages with simple but thought-evoking subject lines.

Stop Multi-tasking. We are inundated with more and more tasks every day. Relentless simultaneous input and output fatigues the brain and reduces productivity and efficiency. You may think that by doing two or three things at once—like participating in a conference call while writing a couple of emails—you are moving faster through your day. But nothing could be further from the truth. Our to-do lists keep getting longer while performance and accuracy slip. So, when working on higher-order thinking tasks that matter, allow your focus to be completely uninterrupted for at least 15 minutes at a time and then gradually increase the length of those intervals.

Move Your Feet. Recently published research shows that aerobic exercise stimulates positive brain change and memory gains faster than we previously thought possible. Adding regular aerobic exercise that elevates your heart rate to your routine at least three times a week for an hour won’t just help with physical health, it will also increase brain blood flow to key memory centers in the brain and improve our memory for facts. When you combine complex thinking with aerobic exercise, brain health benefits are amplified.

Until recently, we thought that cognitive decline was an inevitable part of getting old, but the good news is that’s officially not the case. Toxic habits and a life on autopilot are key culprits for unnecessary cognitive decline. Our research has shown that healthy adults who use these strategies can regain lost cognitive performance, improve blood flow in the brain, speed up communication between its regions and expand its structural connections. And you can actually evoke some of these positive changes in a matter of hours. Adopting this new, healthier way of thinking translates into real-life benefits that support our ability to make decisions, think critically, reason and plan. In other words, shaping your brain by engaging in the right kind of daily mental exercise has the power to reverse brain aging and actually make you smarter. So boost your brainpower! You have nothing to lose.

*

não havendo uvas nas videiras;
mesmo falhando a safra de azeitonas,
não havendo produção de alimento nas lavouras,
nem ovelhas no curral nem bois nos estábulos,
ainda assim eu exultarei no Senhor
e me alegrarei no Deus da minha salvação!
O Senhor Soberano é a minha força;
ele faz os meus pés como os do cervo;
ele me habilita a andar em lugares altos. —Habacuque 3:17–19[2]

Ainda assim, sempre o ajudei e ajudarei a superar tudo.

Overwhelming Love

Words from Jesus

Download Audio (9.9MB)

You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.—1 Peter 2:91

*

Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.—Ephesians 1:4–62

Engulfed in love

If you were to stand before Me in spirit, you would be so engulfed and overwhelmed by My love, that all the hurts and the pain and the misunderstandings of the past and the present would completely vanish! So great is My love for you that there is no room for sorrow or condemnation. If you were standing before Me in spirit, you would feel only total acceptance and total love, because you would know that all is forgiven. There is no fear in Me. I wash away all fear, and there is no fear in My love.

Trust Me that My love for you is no less while your spirit resides within your body on earth than when you shall arrive here and stand before Me. You are just as much forgiven and there is nothing held against you. You are My beloved.

So find peace and rest and comfort in My love.

*

I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.—Jeremiah 31:33

*

I have loved you with an everlasting love. Before time began, I knew you. For years you swam around in a sea of meaninglessness, searching for love, hoping for hope. All that time I was pursuing you, aching to embrace you in My compassionate arms.

When the time was right, I revealed Myself to you. I lifted you out of that sea of despair and set you down on a firm foundation. Sometimes you felt naked—exposed to the revealing light of My presence. I wrapped an ermine robe around you: My robe of righteousness. I sang you a love song, whose beginning and end are veiled in eternity. I infused meaning into your mind and harmony into your heart. Join Me in singing My song. Together we will draw others out of darkness into My marvelous light.4

*

I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.—Isaiah 61:105

Untarnishable love

Nothing will break the tie of love that I have for you. Nothing can come between us. Nothing can separate Me from you, for My love is stronger than anything. No floods can quench it, no doubts can remove it, nothing can tarnish it, for it stands stronger than any of these.

As you seek for and discover My love, as you swim in My love and revel in the ecstasy and the joy that I would give you, you will understand why the martyrs were even able to die for this love. It was greater to them than any trial or any persecution or any problem. It was so strong that even at the moment when they could not feel it, they knew it. It was stronger than any circumstance or any trial. For these pass away, but My love will not pass away.

If you seek Me with all your heart you will find Me, for I would be found of you, and I would draw you unto Me. As you seek Me in the Word, you will find Me, for I will be found of you.

My cup overflows6

In the day of Pentecost I poured forth My Spirit and the manifestation of tongues and prophecy, but “the greatest of these is love.”7 This is a greater gift than the others. I also pour forth My other gifts—of healing, of prophecy, and of tongues—but My gift of love is the greatest of all gifts!

This is a gift that I pour forth as billows of waters and as the waves of the sea! And you can exercise these gifts as you step out upon the waters by faith and walk in My love, speaking words of love and performing acts of love. My love will carry you forth and hold you up even in the midst of gross darkness and tribulation. My love will hold and keep you.

My love has no limit. For I am love and I cannot be contained. And I do pour forth; I break forth on the right hand and on the left. You come to Me with your cup, but I would open channels unto you, continuous channels of My love. If you look to Me, and seek Me first, and put Me first, and draw nigh to Me with your whole heart, you will overflow with My love. Your cup will not be empty, but will overflow! Your cup will run over continually. You will have not your own measly store, but the bountiful, immeasurable store of My love to share with others, to pour forth, to give. And as you give, it shall be given unto you. For the waters that you pour forth, I shall flood you with more, for there is no limit to Me or My love.

As an only child

I love all of My children equally. Each one is precious to Me, and I love each one as if he or she were the only one. Each one is as an only child to Me. This is how I pour forth My love and attention and affection and supply and protection to each one, as to an only child.

I am devoted to each of My children with unending faithfulness, as a mother is to her only child. She faithfully watches over him and cares for him, attends to his education, the supply of his needs, and his desire for love and encouragement and instruction. She watches her only child with great admiration and pride, and finds tremendous joy as he grows and matures and becomes the fulfillment of her dreams. As this mother loves her only child, so do I love each one of My children as an only child, with much love and devotion and attention.

*

All who are mine belong to you, and you have given them to me, so they bring me glory. I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy. Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.—John 17:10, 13, 17, 22–238

Fake Peace Process, Real War Process

By Chase Madar, TomDispatch, Feb. 9, 2014

We Americans have funny notions about foreign aid. Recent polls show that, on average, we believe 28% of the federal budget is eaten up by it, and that, in a time of austerity, this gigantic bite of the budget should be cut back to 10%. In actual fact, barely 1% of the federal budget goes to foreign aid of any kind.

In this case, however, truth is at least as strange as fiction. Consider that the top recipient of U.S. foreign aid over the past three decades isn’t some impoverished land filled with starving kids, but a wealthy nation with a per-head gross domestic product on par with the European Union average, and higher than that of Italy, Spain, or South Korea.

Consider also that this top recipient of such aid—nearly all of it military since 2008—has been busily engaged in what looks like a nineteenth-century-style colonization project. In the late 1940s, our beneficiary expelled some 700,000 indigenous people from the land it was claiming. In 1967, our client seized some contiguous pieces of real estate and ever since has been colonizing these territories with nearly 650,000 of its own people. It has divided the conquered lands with myriad checkpoints and roads accessible only to the colonizers and is building a 440-mile wall around (and cutting into) the conquered territory, creating a geography of control that violates international law.

“Ethnic cleansing” is a harsh term, but apt for a situation in which people are driven out of their homes and lands because they are not of the right tribe. Though many will balk at leveling this charge against Israel—for that country is, of course, the top recipient of American aid and especially military largesse—who would hesitate to use the term if, in a mirror-image world, all of this were being inflicted on Israeli Jews?

Arming and bankrolling a wealthy nation acting in this way may, on its face, seem like terrible policy. Yet American aid has been flowing to Israel in ever greater quantities. Over the past 60 years, in fact, Israel has absorbed close to a quarter-trillion dollars in such aid. Last year alone, Washington sent some $3.1 billion in military aid, supplemented by allocations for collaborative military research and joint training exercises.

Overall, the United States covers nearly one quarter of Israel’s defense budget—from tear gas canisters to F-16 fighter jets. In their 2008-2009 assault on Gaza, the Israeli Defense Forces made use of M-92 and M-84 “dumb bombs,” Paveway II and JDAM guided “smart bombs,” AH-64 Apache attack helicopters equipped with AGM-114 Hellfire guided missiles, M141 “bunker defeat” munitions, and special weapons like M825A1 155mm white phosphorous munitions—all supplied as American foreign aid. (Uniquely among Washington’s aid recipients, Israel is also permitted to spend 25% of the military funding from Washington on weapons made by its own weapons industry.)

Why is Washington doing this? The most common answer is the simplest: Israel is Washington’s “ally.” But the United States has dozens of allies around the world, none of which are subsidized in anything like this fashion by American taxpayer dollars. As there is no formal treaty alliance between the two nations and given the lopsided nature of the costs and benefits of this relationship, a far more accurate term for Israel’s tie to Washington might be “client state.”

And not a particularly loyal client either. If massive military aid is supposed to give Washington leverage over Israel (as it normally does in client-state relationships), it is difficult to detect. In case you hadn’t noticed, rare is the American diplomatic visit to Israel that is not greeted with an in-your-face announcement of intensified colonization of Palestinian territory, euphemistically called “settlement expansion.”

Washington also provides aid to Palestine totaling, on average, $875 million annually in Obama’s first term (more than double what George W. Bush gave in his second term). That’s a little more than a quarter of what Israel gets. Much of it goes to projects of dubious net value like the development of irrigation networks at a moment when the Israelis are destroying Palestinian cisterns and wells elsewhere in the West Bank. Another significant part of that funding goes toward training the Palestinian security forces. Known as “Dayton forces” (after the American general, Keith Dayton, who led their training from 2005 to 2010), these troops have a grim human rights record that includes acts of torture, as Dayton himself has admitted. One former Dayton deputy, an American colonel, described these security forces to al-Jazeera as an outsourced “third Israeli security arm.” According to Josh Ruebner, national advocacy director for the U.S. Campaign to End the Occupation and author of Shattered Hopes: Obama’s Failure to Broker Israeli-Palestinian Peace, American aid to Palestine serves mainly to entrench the Israeli occupation.

Nothing is equal when it comes to Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip—and the numbers say it all. To offer just one example, the death toll from Operation Cast Lead, Israel’s 2008-2009 assault on the Gaza Strip, was 1,385 Palestinians (the majority of them civilians) and 13 Israelis, three of them civilians.

And yet mainstream opinion in the U.S. insists on seeing the two parties as essentially equal. Harold Koh, former dean of the Yale Law School and until recently the top lawyer at the State Department, has been typical in comparing Washington’s role to “adult supervision” of “a playground populated by warring switchblade gangs.” It was a particularly odd choice of metaphors, given that one side is equipped with small arms and rockets of varying sophistication, the other with nuclear weapons and a state-of-the-art modern military subsidized by the world’s only superpower.

Washington’s active role in all of this is not lost on anyone on the world stage—except Americans, who have declared themselves to be the even-handed arbiters of a conflict involving endless failed efforts at brokering a “peace process.” Globally, fewer and fewer observers believe in this fiction of Washington as a benevolent bystander rather than a participant heavily implicated in a humanitarian crisis. In 2012, the widely respected International Crisis Group described the “peace process” as “a collective addiction that serves all manner of needs, reaching an agreement no longer being the main one.”

The contradiction between military and diplomatic support for one party in the conflict and the pretense of neutrality cannot be explained away. “Looked at objectively, it can be argued that American diplomatic efforts in the Middle East have, if anything, made achieving peace between Palestinians and Israelis more difficult,” writes Rashid Khalidi, a historian at Columbia University, and author of Brokers of Deceit: How the U.S. Has Undermined Peace in the Middle East.

American policy elites are unable or unwilling to talk about Washington’s destructive role in this situation. There is plenty of discussion about a one-state versus a two-state solution, constant disapproval of Palestinian violence, occasional mild criticism (“not helpful”) of the Israeli settlements, and lately, a lively debate about the global boycott, divestment, and sanction movement (BDS) led by Palestinian civil society to pressure Israel into a “just and lasting” peace. But when it comes to what Americans are most responsible for—all that lavish military aid and diplomatic cover for one side only—what you get is either euphemism or an evasive silence.

In general, the American media tends to treat our arming of Israel as part of the natural order of the universe, as beyond question as the force of gravity. Even the “quality” media shies away from any discussion of Washington’s real role in fueling the Israel-Palestine conflict. Last month, for instance, the New York Times ran an article about a prospective “post-American” Middle East without any mention of Washington’s aid to Israel, or for that matter to Egypt, or the Fifth Fleet parked in Bahrain.

You might think that the progressive hosts of MSNBC’s news programs would be all over the story of what American taxpayers are subsidizing, but the topic barely flickers across the chat shows of Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, and others. Given this across-the-board selective reticence, American coverage of Israel and Palestine, and particularly of American military aid to Israel, resembles the Agatha Christie novel in which the first-person narrator, observing and commenting on the action in calm semi-detachment, turns out to be the murderer.

On the activist front, American military patronage of Israel is not much discussed either, in large part because the aid package is so deeply entrenched that no attempt to cut it back could succeed in the near future. Hence, the global BDS campaign has focused on smaller, more achievable targets, though as Yousef Munayyer, executive director of the Jerusalem Fund, an advocacy group, told me, the BDS movement does envision an end to Washington’s military transfers in the long term. This makes tactical sense, and both the Jerusalem Fund and the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation are engaged in ongoing campaigns to inform the public about American military aid to Israel.

Less understandable are the lobbying groups that advertise themselves as “pro-peace,” champions of “dialogue” and “conversation,” but share the same bottom line on military aid for Israel as their overtly hawkish counterparts. For instance, J Street (“pro-Israel and pro-peace”), a Washington-based nonprofit which bills itself as a moderate alternative to the powerhouse lobbying outfit, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), supports both “robust” military aid and any supplemental disbursements on offer from Washington to the Israeli Defense Forces. Americans for Peace Now similarly takes the position that Washington should provide “robust assistance” to ensure Israel’s “qualitative military edge.” At the risk of sounding literal-minded, any group plumping for enormous military aid packages to a country acting as Israel has is emphatically not “pro-peace.” It’s almost as if the Central America solidarity groups from the 1980s had demanded peace, while lobbying Washington to keep funding the Contras and the Salvadoran military.

Outside the various factions of the Israel lobby, the landscape is just as flat. The Center for American Progress, a Washington think tank close to the Democratic Party, regularly issues pious statements about new hopes for the “peace process”—with never a mention of how our unconditional flow of advanced weaponry might be a disincentive to any just resolution of the situation.

There is, by the way, a similar dynamic at work when it comes to Washington’s second biggest recipient of foreign aid, Egypt. Washington’s expenditure of more than $60 billion over the past 30 years ensured both peace with Israel and Cold War loyalty, while propping up an authoritarian government with a ghastly human rights record. As the post-Mubarak military restores its grip on Egypt, official Washington is currently at work finding ways to keep the military aid flowing despite a congressional ban on arming regimes that overthrow elected governments. There is, however, at least some mainstream public debate in the U.S. about ending aid to the Egyptian generals who have violently reclaimed power. Investigative journalism nonprofit ProPublica has even drafted a handy “explainer” about U.S. military aid to Egypt—though they have not tried to explain aid to Israel.

Silence about U.S.-Israel relations is, to a large degree, hardwired into Beltway culture. As George Perkovich, director of the nuclear policy program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace told the Washington Post, “It’s like all things having to do with Israel and the United States. If you want to get ahead, you don’t talk about it; you don’t criticize Israel, you protect Israel.”

This is regrettable, as Washington’s politically invisible military aid to Israel is not just an impediment to lasting peace, but also a strategic and security liability. As General David Petraeus, then head of U.S. Central Command, testified to the Senate Armed Services Committee in 2010, the failure to reach a lasting resolution to the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians makes Washington’s other foreign policy objectives in the region more difficult to achieve. It also, he pointed out, foments anti-American hatred and fuels al-Qaeda and other violent groups. Petraeus’s successor at CENTCOM, General James Mattis, echoed this list of liabilities in a public dialogue with Wolf Blitzer last July:

“I paid a military security price every day as a commander of CENTCOM because the Americans were seen as biased in support of Israel, and that [alienates] all the moderate Arabs who want to be with us because they can’t come out publicly in support of people who don’t show respect for the Arab Palestinians.”

Don’t believe the generals? Ask a terrorist. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks now imprisoned at Guantanamo, told interrogators that he was motivated to attack the United States in large part because of Washington’s leading role in assisting Israel’s repeated invasions of Lebanon and the ongoing dispossession of Palestinians.

The Israel lobby wheels out a battery of arguments in favor of arming and funding Israel, including the assertion that a step back from such aid for Israel would signify a “retreat” into “isolationism.” But would the United States, a global hegemon busily engaged in nearly every aspect world affairs, be “isolated” if it ceased giving lavish military aid to Israel? Was the United States “isolated” before 1967 when it expanded that aid in a major way? These questions answer themselves.

Sometimes the mere act of pointing out the degree of U.S. aid to Israel provokes accusations of having a special antipathy for Israel. This may work as emotional blackmail, but if someone proposed that Washington start shipping Armenia $3.1 billion worth of armaments annually so that it could begin the conquest of its ancestral province of Nagorno-Karabakh in neighboring Azerbaijan, the plan would be considered ludicrous—and not because of a visceral dislike for Armenians. Yet somehow the assumption that Washington is required to generously arm the Israeli military has become deeply institutionalized in this country.

Today, Secretary of State John Kerry is leading a push for a renewed round of the interminable American-led peace process in the region that has been underway since the mid-1970s. It’s hardly a bold prediction to suggest that this round, too, will fail. The Israeli minister of defense, Moshe Ya’alon, has already publicly mocked Kerry in his quest for peace as “obsessive and messianic” and added that the newly proposed framework for this round of negotiations is “not worth the paper it’s printed on.” Other Israeli high officials blasted Kerry for his mere mention of the potential negative consequences to Israel of a global boycott if peace is not achieved.

But why shouldn’t Ya’alon and other Israeli officials tee off on the hapless Kerry? After all, the defense minister knows that Washington will wield no stick and that bushels of carrots are in the offing, whether Israel rolls back or redoubles its land seizures and colonization efforts. President Obama has boasted that the U.S. has never given so much military aid to Israel as under his presidency. On January 29th, the House Foreign Affairs Committee voted unanimously to upgrade Israel’s status to “major strategic partner.” With Congress and the president guaranteeing that unprecedented levels of military aid will continue to flow, Israel has no real incentive to change its behavior.

Usually such diplomatic impasses are blamed on the Palestinians, but given how little is left to squeeze out of them, doing so this time will test the creativity of official Washington. Whatever happens, in the post-mortems to come there will be no discussion in Washington about the role its own policies played in undermining a just and lasting agreement.

How much longer will this silence last? The arming and bankrolling of a wealthy nation committing ethnic cleansing has something to offend conservatives, progressives, and just about every other political grouping in America. After all, how often in foreign policy does strategic self-interest align so neatly with human rights and common decency?

Intelligent people can and do disagree about a one-state versus a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. People of goodwill disagree about the global BDS campaign. But it is hard to imagine what kind of progress can ever be made toward a just and lasting settlement between Israel and Palestine until Washington quits arming one side to the teeth.

“If it weren’t for U.S. support for Israel, this conflict would have been resolved a long time ago,” says Josh Ruebner. Will we Americans ever acknowledge our government’s active role in destroying the chances for a just and lasting peace between Palestine and Israel?

Jewish Hospital a Fixture in Tehran

By Thomas Erdbrink, NY Times, Feb. 9, 2014

TEHRAN—Sitting in his office at Tehran’s only Jewish hospital, Ciamak Morsadegh lit another cigarette and reminisced about how his wife left Iran for the United States after he insisted on staying.

Dr. Morsadegh, the director of the Dr. Sapir Hospital and Charity Center here, said that unlike thousands of other Jews he has never thought about leaving the Islamic Republic, for the simple reason that Iran is his home.

“I speak English, I pray in Hebrew, but I think in Persian,” said Dr. Morsadegh, a surgeon who is also a member of Parliament. “I am Iranian. Iranian-Jewish.”

Many were surprised last week when the government of President Hassan Rouhani donated $400,000 to the Dr. Sapir Hospital, but Dr. Morsadegh was not among them.

“We Jews are a part of Iran’s history,” he said. “What is important is that Mr. Rouhani makes big news out of supporting us. He is showing that we, as a religious minority, are part of this country, too.”

Situated on Mostafa Khomeini Street—named for the son of the Islamic Republic’s founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini—the hospital sits across from the Imam Reza Seminary school, one of the oldest Shiite seminaries in Tehran. White-turbaned clerics pass by, talking in hushed tones with their students. Though the hospital might seem out of place, local people do not seem to think so.

“When I am sick I go across the street,” Mohammad Mirghanin, a seminary student, said as he rushed to class. “They might have a different religion, but they are fellow Iranians. I do not see why I should not go to the Jewish hospital.”

On Saturday, a woman in a traditional black chador approached Khoddad Asnashahri, the hospital’s managing director and a Muslim, and asked for help.

“I went to the Iman Khomeini hospital with my daughter who needs a sonogram, but over there it costs 500,000 to man,” or roughly $200, said the woman, Zahra Hajabdolmaleki.

“We will help you here for half that amount,” Mr. Asnashahri pledged.

Named after a Jewish doctor who died in 1921 while trying to cure patients during a typhus epidemic raging through Tehran, the hospital started out as a clinic where all Iranians could come for medical care at vastly reduced rates. For more than 50 years it has been a meeting point for Iranian Jews and Muslims and the most prominent Jewish charity in the capital.

Mr. Asnashahri, who has worked at the hospital for nearly 48 years, praised the “good atmosphere” while also noting that only five Jewish physicians remained. “Many have migrated and others have bought shares in more modern hospitals,” he said.

About 96 percent of patients are Muslim, like most of the hospital’s employees. But what mattered most, he said, was the message that “here all people can come, no matter what religion, color or race.”

Though the Jewish population of Iran is dwindling—now at about 9,000, according to an official census by the Statistical Center of Iran, though other estimates range to 20,000—the country has the largest number of Jews in the Middle East after Israel.

Dr. Morsadegh, the surgeon, has devoted his life to that diminishing community. He was a leader of the Tehran Jewish Committee, a group that supports synagogues, schools and other facets of Jewish life in Iran, and in 2008 was elected as the Jewish representative in Parliament, where five official religious minorities have a permanent seat.

He will not say that the situation for Jews and the other official religious minorities—Christian Armenians, Assyrians, Chaldeans and Zoroastrians—is perfect in Iran. The five minorities would like to see an Islamic law changed that allows one of their faith who converts to Islam to get the entire inheritance of his or her non-Muslim family, for example. Yet things are worse for evangelical Christians and Bahais, who can face prison sentences and in many cases exclusion from higher education.

Dr. Morsadegh said former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s repeated Holocaust denials left psychological scars, as well. “Look, all Jews believe in the Holocaust,” he said. “It would have been much better if the former president had not raised that issue.”

President Rouhani has remained silent on the Holocaust, and in September his social media team wished Jews around the world a happy Rosh Hashana.

“It has gotten a lot better,” Dr. Morsadegh said, recalling how thousands of Jews left the country after the 1979 revolution. Many more have emigrated since then, often because of Iran’s bad economy.

In September, Dr. Morsadegh joined President Rouhani on his trip to the United Nations in New York. Some in Iran have hinted at a connection between the president’s financial donation to the hospital and Dr. Morsadegh’s enthusiastic defense of Iran and the position of Jews in the country.

But the doctor is not bothered by those questions. “I helped out in the war with Iraq for this country, as a first aid doctor,” he said. “And I’d do it again tomorrow.”

‘F… Europe’

By Eric Margolis, February 09, 2014

“F… Europe!” Such were the words used in Kiev, Ukraine by Victoria Nuland, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe.

Nuland was referring to the European Union’s reluctance to get too deeply involved in Ukraine’s current strife or to impose sanctions on the former Soviet republic. But Nuland perfectly captured Washington’s sneering view of Europe as a collection of feeble and irrelevant banana republics.

Nuland is a prominent American neoconservative. Like her fellow neocons, she disdains Europe for being unwarlike, mildly critical of Israel, and often insufficiently responsive to Washington’s demands—or even insubordinate, like the awful French.

How delicious was it that Nuland’s pithy reference to Europe and her plans for a new western-confected government in Ukraine—where the US insists it is not at all interfering—were picked by Russian electronic intelligence and played to the world. How dim for Madame Nuland to speak so thoughtlessly on her cell phone.

Of late, Nuland and other senior US officials have been blasting Moscow for “meddling” in Ukraine. The leaked phone recording has Nuland telling the US ambassador to Kiev which of the three opposition candidates Washington wants to run Ukraine.

Nuland’s plans for regime change in Kiev have been a godsend to Moscow, which claims the US and EU are behind the uprising in Ukraine. She has just undermined the democratic Ukrainian opposition by making them look like American puppets.

Score one for Russia’s spooks. All Nuland could do was splutter about how Russian intelligence had intercepted her cell phone. This after the US National Security Agency was revealed to be bugging the phones and email of most of Europe’s leaders. What goes around comes around.

All this was most amusing—except that it highlighted the growing US-Russian confrontation over Ukraine that risks turning very dangerous.

A senior Russian official close to President Vladimir Putin just warned Washington to butt out of Ukraine—or else. Europe is rightfully fearful that the Ukraine crisis could cause a head-on clash by Washington and Moscow—just as the little Russia-Georgia War over Ossetia almost did in 2008.

Interestingly, during that crisis, the US rushed warships to the Black Sea. This time, US Navy warships are back again in the Black Sea under the laughable excuse they are on station to evacuate US tourists to the Sochi Olympics if violence occurs.

Day by day, we see growing rancor between the US and Russia. Most of it is unfair criticism and childish spats, but the overall effect is creating the basis for war fever. The same bickering, cheap criticism and manufactured anger created the psychological basis in Britain for the utterly catastrophic World War I. Three years later, it was repeated in the United States to whip up anti-German fever.

The US media is barraging Russia and Putin with a drumfire of negative stories. The Sochi Olympics have come in for relentless, petty attacks and low-minded carping.

Anyone who knows Russia should be in awe that the normally bumbling, disorganized Ruskis managed to get their Olympic sites finished more or less on time—and that they still remain standing.

So what if Russia spent billions on the Sochi Olympics. Who is Washington to criticize Moscow after pouring over $2 trillion into the stupid wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and now Syria, with nothing to show but huge debts, armies of refugees, and graveyards?

America’s national security establishment—what used to be known in Britain as imperialists—is now turning its guns on Russia, aided by the US corporate media. Vlad Putin’s Russia has re-emerged as America’s number one enemy. Muslims are out. At times, the Cold War seems to be inching back. The US narrowly escaped a dangerous military clash over President Barack Obama’s intemperate rush to war over Syria.

Nuclear powers must not indulge in such school-yard squabbles. World War I, whose 100th anniversary comes this fall, began just this way.

Putin’s Russia is no Utopia, but do we really want angry, expansionist Russians again on our eastern borders? Better they focus on Olympic games and shopping sprees. Unlike us, they have not started any wars lately.
