Peaising God Through a Declaration of Faith

Becky Harling

Praising God through a declaration of faith

There are times, especially when fighting doubt, when it can be extremely helpful to praise God by declaring our faith out loud. One of the most basic declarations of faith is called the Apostles’ Creed. If you grew up worshipping in a liturgical church or are presently attending one, you will be familiar with the words. Many congregations recite this out loud as a part of their worship celebration. I believe the Apostles’ Creed can even play a role in our private worship. You can use it as a model to write your own declaration of faith, or you might want to use the creed itself as your declaration. Read the declaration out loud several times slowly, then listen to “Manifesto” performed by The City Harmonic. As you listen, allow the words of the creed to be the words of your heart as you declare your faith.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven & earth:

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, & was buried.

He descended into Hell.

On the third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended into Heaven

& sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence He will come to judge the living & the dead.

praising God through a declaration of faith

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

& the life everlasting.

Amen.

Praising God when you are grieving or feeling depressed

Each of us will experience loss or pain at some point in our lives. During those times, it is normal to experience sadness & even depression. Praising God builds a shield around our hearts & minds so that we don’t sink into despair.

Several years ago I experienced many losses & felt overwhelmed & discouraged. During those months I made a commitment to continue my habit of praising God every morning. Some mornings while I listened to worship music, I knelt & cried. As I offered God my tears & my trust, some of my sadness was released & my faith was rekindled. Like Job, I was able to say, “The LORD gave & the LORD has taken away; may the Name of the LORD be praised” (Job 1:21). As I knelt in worship each morning, God’s presence came close & I felt comforted in my sorrow.

Here are some tips for praising God during times of grieving, sadness, or discouragement:

Look back. Praising God for how He’s been faithful in the past can give you hope that He will continue to be faithful in the present & in the future.

Let your tears flow. Praising God doesn’t always come from a happy heart. It’s okay & even good to allow yourself to cry during times of grief. Sometimes weeping is our worship.

Develop a set of “emergency verses.” During times of grief, it is comforting to praise God using Scripture that is familiar & special to you personally. Some of my favorites are Ps.34, Ps.46, Ps.91, & Jn.15.

Take a worship walk. Walking releases endorphins, & worship strengthens your faith. Combined, you’ll find your spirits lifted.

Keep a Thankful List. I learned this during a particularly rough season in my life. Each night before I went to bed, I recorded 3-5 things that had happened that day for which I felt thankful. After praising God for each one, I was able to fall asleep feeling encouraged.

Letter from the Author

Dear Friend,

I hope you have enjoyed the 30-day praise challenge, & that you’ll continue in your journey of praise. Praise never grows old or boring. I know, because I’ve now been praising God intentionally for over 12 years. My praise times have deepened & developed into the most precious times I experience with God. Praise renews & sustains me each day.

My prayer for you has been that you have experienced a spiritual revival in your soul & that you will continue to praise God every day. It’s possible that you’ve experienced not only changes in your attitude, but also freedom from addictive behaviors or destructive patterns of thought. There might even have been a couple of miracles along the way. If you feel comfortable sharing your experiences, I’d love to hear from you!

When we share our stories of life transformation, we encourage one another to continue praising God. You can contact me at www.beckyharling.com to learn more about my ministry & what God is doing in my life.

Praising God to defeat the Enemy

Praising God to defeat the Enemy - Becky Harling

When we become serious about praising God, Satan gets ticked. Often he will attack when we least expect it. He may attack our minds, our bodies, or our spirits. It is important that we are aware of his antics but also that we have a plan to deal with him. God’s Word instructs us to “Be self-controlled & alert. Your Enemy the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith” (1Pet.5:8-9).

Praise combined with the power of Scripture is the most effective method I know for bolstering my faith & defeating Satan. When we praise God, Satan flees. We see this principle illustrated in 2Chr.20. Enemies surrounded King Jehoshaphat & the army of Judah on every side. The situation looked hopeless, but Jehoshaphat came up with a bizarre battle plan. He instructed the choir to march out in front of the army & to sing praises to the Lord for the splendor of His holiness. As the choir followed the king’s instructions, singing, “Give thanks to the LORD, for His love endures forever” (2Chr.20:21), the Lord sent ambushes against the enemies & they were annihilated. The only weapons lifted by the Judeans were the weapons of praise & Scripture.

There are times in my life when problems seem to surround me on every side, & I feel overwhelmed, discouraged, fearful, or anxious. When those feelings come, I know that Satan is close, so I have learned it’s best to have a plan. Here is my plan: Purposefully praise God, & use Scripture in my praise. When I do that, Satan flees.

Let me show you how this works, & then give you some passages of Scripture to use for specific attacks from the Enemy. In the space below, you may want to add Scriptures that have been particularly meaningful to you.

When I believe Satan might be attacking me, I immediately begin praying a prayer similar to this:

“Lord Jesus, I exalt You as the King of Kings & Lord of Lords. I praise You that You have overcome the evil one & that by Your death & resurrection, Satan has been hurled down. Thank You for reigning in my life & that my days are in Your hands. I trust You because You promise to deliver me from evil. Thank You that I don’t have to fear the Evil One because You have already defeated him. Because of Your blood I stand as a victor over every evil plan of his to attack me. I praise You that all power, authority, & honor belong to You & that someday every knee will bow. All the nations will come & worship You alone.” (Rev.19:16; Rev.12:10; Ps.31:15; Rev.15:4)

Some of my favorite passages of Scripture to use to defeat the Enemy are listed below.

When Satan is attacking me with fear:

Ps.27:1—“The LORD is my light & my salvation—whom shall I fear?”

Ps.46:1–3—“God is our refuge & strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way & the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar & foam & the mountains quake with their surging.”

Ps.91:1-2, 4-5—“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge & my fortress, my God, in Whom I trust.’ … He will cover you with His feathers, & under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield & rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.”

Phil.2:9-11—“Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place & gave to Him the name that is above every name, that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in Heaven & on earth & under the earth, & every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

When Satan is attacking me with self-doubt:

Jn.15:5—“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me & I in him, he will bear much fruit.”

Phil.4:13—“I can do everything through Him Who gives me strength.”

Heb.10:35-36—“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.”

When Satan is attacking me with feelings of being overwhelmed:

Ps.45:4—“In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility & righteousness; let your right hand display awesome deeds.”

1Jn.2:14, 20—“The Word of God lives in you, & you have overcome the Evil One.… But you have an anointing from the Holy One, & all of you know the truth.”

Rev.12:11—“They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb & by the word of their testimony.”

When Satan is attacking me with feelings of guilt or shame:

Jn.15:3—“You are already clean because of the Word I have spoken to you.”

Col.1:22—“But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish & free from accusation.”

Rev.5:12-13—“Worthy is the Lamb, Who was slain, to receive power & wealth & strength & honor & glory & praise!… To Him Who sits on the Throne & to the Lamb be praise & honor & glory & power, forever & ever!”

When Satan is attacking me with disparaging thoughts about my body:

Ps.139:13-14—“For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully & wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

When Satan is attacking me with thoughts of despair:

Jn.11:25—“I am the resurrection & the life.”

1Pet.1:3-5—“Praise be to the God & Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, & into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in Heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power.”

Praising God from the Book of Revelation

Beck Harling

Someday we will all praise God for all eternity. It’s difficult to wrap our minds around that thought. I like to think of my time of praise here on earth as my dress rehearsal. It helps me remember that in Heaven it is completely natural to praise God. To remind myself of this, I use some of the prayers of praise found in Revelation in my praise time. Here are some that I have found particularly helpful:

Rev.4:8, 11—“Holy, holy, holy, is that Lord God Almighty, Who was, & is, & is to come.… You are worthy, our Lord & God, to receive glory & honor & power, for You created all things, & by Your will they were created & have their being.”

Rev.5:9-10, 12-13—“You are worthy to take the scroll & to open its seals, because You were slain, & with Your blood You purchased men for God from every tribe & language & people & nation. You have made them to be a Kingdom & priests to serve our God, & they will reign on the earth.… Worthy is the Lamb, Who was slain, to receive power & wealth & wisdom & strength & honor & glory & praise!… To Him Who sits on the Throne & to the Lamb be praise & honor & glory & power, for ever & ever!”

Rev.7:10, 12—“Salvation belongs to our God, Who sits on the Throne, & to the Lamb… Praise & glory & wisdom & thanks & honor & power & strength be to our God for ever & ever. Amen!”

Rev.11:16-17—“We give thanks to You, Lord God Almighty, Who is & Who was, because You have taken your great power & have begun to reign.”

Rev.15:3-4—“Great & marvelous are Your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just & true are Your ways, King of the ages. Who will not fear you, O Lord, & bring glory to Your Name? For You alone are holy. All nations will come & worship before You, for Your righteous acts have been revealed.”

30 Day Praise Challenge - Day 30

Becky Harling

Day 30

“You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.” – Heb.10:36

The Invitation

“My child, I know there are days when you feel like quitting. Faithfulness in living a life of praise is difficult. The world is a negative place filled with people who gripe & complain. When you prioritize thanksgiving, you stand out from the crowd, & I am honored. In seasons of great pressure, it’s easy to believe that I am not on your side & that I am not really changing your life. This is not the truth. Rejoice that the challenges you face are producing perseverance in you. Continue on the path where I have called you. There will be times of great pressure in the days ahead when you will need to know My presence more deeply. Remember, praise unlocks the door to experiencing My presence. Faithfulness in worship will pay off as you continue. Gradually, you will find yourself being transformed into a more positive, hopeful, & confident person. As you continue to praise Me, I will bring your heart into a deeper understanding of My love. My child, don’t quit too soon. If you persist in giving Me praise, you will receive the blessings I have promised, & you will find that your endurance in other areas of life will grow. Now that you have learned to have intentional times of praise, learn to have an attitude of worship 24/7. Live your life with a continual awareness of My presence. Push back against the demands of your day to prioritize continually offering Me a sacrifice of praise.” (Heb.10:36; Rom.5:3; Jam.1:12; Heb.13:15)

Throughout your time today praise God in faith for empowering you to persevere in making praise a priority in your life. Often when we praise God there is a breakthrough in what appears to be a hopeless situation. So unless God has specifically called you to quit in some area, praise your way to perseverance.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders & the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Heb.12:1)

Listen

Listen to “Running” performed by Hillsong Live & “At Your Name (Yahweh, Yahweh)” by Phil Wickham.

Pray

Lord Jesus, You are worthy to receive glory & honor & power because You are faithful to everything the Father has called you to do, even death on the cross. I thank You that when I feel like giving up __________________ [name the areas of life where you are feeling like giving up], I can draw from Your faithfulness, & You will strengthen me to persevere. I praise You that even at this moment, there is a crowd of Your faithful followers in Heaven cheering me on to the finish line. Thank You that if I fix my eyes on You, Lord Jesus, I can run the rest of my life’s race with perseverance. You are the One Who called me, & You promise to pour out Your faithfulness through me. Now that I have learned to be intentional in praise, I long to have my worship life grow so that I have a heart of praise all day long. How can I say thank You for being so good to me? By Your grace, I will persevere in keeping my vows to You so that You will be exalted & glorified in my life. I worship You, Lord Jesus. (Rev.4:11; Heb.12:1-2; 1Thes.5:24; Ps.113:2; Ps.116:13-14)

Journal

Identify areas of your life where you feel tempted to quit or give up (your marriage, finances & getting out of debt, disciplining children, job responsibilities, praying for the salvation of a loved one, relationships, commitments you’ve made to the Lord, prioritizing time with God, or any other area where you have felt God’s calling). How has this journey through the 30 days of praise helped you to persevere in that area? What is the most significant change you have experienced during the 30-day praise challenge?

Day 24 - Becky Harling's 30 Day Praise Challenge

Day 24

“I am the LORD, Who heals you.” – Ex.15:26

The Invitation

“When you are suffering, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually, call on Me for healing. I am the Lord who heals you. Too often, My child, you hesitate to ask Me for healing for fear that you will be disappointed. But this doesn’t protect you; it only prevents you from experiencing all that I desire to give you. Instead, praise Me for My healing power. Healing may come in this lifetime, or I may call you to Heaven for your final & complete healing. Either way, I want you to trust Me. I am filled with compassion for you, & My presence will always be with you. Exalt Me as your Messiah who rises with healing in His wings. As you praise Me, I will draw you deeper into My healing power; memories, emotions, & bodies are all healed in My presence. Even though you do not always understand My decisions about healing, will you dare to praise Me anyway? Within the scope of eternity, weeping only lasts for a short time, & joy comes in the morning. Someday there will be an end to all physical & emotional suffering.” (Ex.15:26; Mk.10:51; Lk.7:22; Mal.4:2; Ps.30:5)

In your worship time today, focus on Jesus’ healing power. Too often we hesitate to ask Him for the very healing He desires to bring us. Praise Him that He longs to heal your memories, emotions, addictions, & body. Praise Him for His healing power in the lives of those you love.

“By His wounds you have been healed.” (1Pet.2:24)

Listen

Listen to Healing” performed by Ben & Noelle & “Healer” performed by Kari Jobe.

Pray

Holy Healer, I praise You for Your healing. Thank You that I am made whole in Your presence & that You desire to heal my body, soul, & spirit. I lay before You these needs of healing ______________ [name any physical ailments, emotional pain, painful memories, addictions, or compulsions], & I praise You for the healing You will bring. Thank You that I can call on the elders in my church & other mentors in my life to pray on my behalf for healing. How thankful I am that I can trust You, even though I don’t always understand Your ways. I praise You that as I worship You, You promise to turn my valley of weeping into a place of abundant blessing. Thank You that You are a God who restores health & heals wounds. As You heal me, You will bring opportunities for me to share the healing work You have accomplished in my life for Your glory. How I praise You! (Mal.4:2; Jam.5:16; Ps.84:5-6; Jer.30:17; Ps.107:15, 20)

Day 23: "30 Day Praise Challenge" - Becky Harling

Day 23

“Therefore, I urge you, Brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy & pleasing to God—which is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this World, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Rom.12:1-2

The Invitation

“My child, all worship begins with open hands & bowed knees. I desire absolute supremacy in your life. The things you cling to most tightly become idols that you worship instead of worshipping Me. Open your hands, & let go. I know it can feel terrifying for you to surrender. But when you place your life, & the lives of those you love, completely in My hands, I am able to accomplish My perfect will through you. You have not been placed here on the earth to live your own life & seek your own fulfilment. You are here to glorify Me, to have My life lived through you. The only way for this to happen is for you to join Me in My crucifixion. Praise Me that as you die to your selfish desires, I am reborn in you & the power of My resurrection becomes evident in your life. Then, & only then, can you be the person I have called you to be. Only then can I give all of Myself to you. In the end, that is your greatest desire.” (Rev.19:10; Col.1:18; Gal.2:20; Heb.11:17-19)

As you worship today, get down on your knees if you can. What is the hardest thing for you to surrender? As you listen to the praise music listed in today’s Listen section, imagine God inviting you to place in His hands your spouse or your desire for a spouse, your children or your desire for children, your career or your desire for a career, your friends, your home, & your health. Then when you are ready, open your hands to symbolically surrender. Place everything in the Lord’s hands & acknowledge that He alone is worthy of all your praise.

“I have been crucified with Christ & I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” (Gal.2:20)

Listen

Listen to “Arms Open Wide” performed by Hillsong United & “At the Cross” & “ISurrender,” both performed by Hillsong Live.

Pray

Lord Jesus, I bow before You. You are the holy & exalted One, & the only One who is worthy of all my praise. I surrender my longings, my spouse, my children, my parents, my friendships, my finances, my dreams, & my home. Take my entire life. I give You my body, my health, my emotions, my gifts & abilities, & my strengths & weaknesses. Nothing that I may be tempted to hold on to compares to You. I worship & praise You above all else. Thank You for inviting me to place all that in Your hands when I follow You. Thank You for promising to use me for Your glory, & that when I surrender everything to You, I will find true life in the end. I praise You for promising that I will receive a hundred times more than anything I could ever give up for Your Name. I worship You, Lord Jesus. (Mat.10:37-38; Mat.19:29)

Journal

What are you most terrified to surrender to God? How might praising God fill you with enough courage to open your hands & let go?

Until Then Will You Be Singing?

 Dennis Edwards

Here are the words to the song Until Then written by Carl Stuart Hamblen (1908 - 1989).

My heart can sing when I pause to remember
A heartache here is but a stepping stone
Along a trail that's winding always upward.
This troubled world is not my final home.

But until then my heart will go on singing:
Until thern, with joy I'll carry on,
Until the day, my eyes behold the City,
Until the day God calls me home.

The things of earth will dim and lose their value
When we recall they're just borrowed for awhile.
And things of earth that caused my heart to tremble
Remembered There, will only bring a smile.

But until then.....

This weary world with all its toil and struggle
May take its toll of misery and strife.
The soul of man is like a waiting falcon;
When it's released, it's destined for the skies.

But until then.....
The verse used in the talk:

Psalm 73:17a "Until I went into the sanctuary of God, then I understood..."
Psalm 73:25-26 "Whom have I in heaven but Thee and there is none that I desire besides Thee. My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
Psalm 73:28 "But it is good for me to draw near to God."
Psalm 100:1-2 "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness. Enter into His presence with singing, and into His courts with praise."
Psalm 92:1-2 "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O Most High. To show forth Thy loving kondness in the morning, and Thy faithfulness every night."
Psalm 147:1 "Praise ye the Lord, for it is good to sing praise unto our God, for it is pleasant and praise is fitting.
Psalm 13:6 "I will sing unto the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.
Psalm 104:33 "I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live. I will sing praises to my God while I have my being."
Psalm 59:16-17 "But I will sing of Thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of Thy mercy in the morning; for Thou has been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. Unto Thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence and the God of my mercy."
Psalm 137 "By the river of Babylon"
Matthew 26:30 "And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives."
Acts 16:25-26 "And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every ones bonds were loosed."
Exodus 15:1 Moses gave the people a song to sing and remember the Lord's victory over their enemies. Exodus 15:21 Miriam, Moses sister, led the woman of Israel in singing the song.
Colossians 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Becky Harling's 30 Day Praise Challenge

Day 18:  by Becky Harling

“Do not judge, & you will not be judged. Do not condemn, & you will not be condemned. Forgive, & you will be forgiven.” – Luke 6:37

The Invitation

“Praise Me for the people who drive you crazy & are difficult to love. Thank Me for their annoying habits & irritating idiosyncrasies. I can use these people to mold & shape you into My image. Thank Me that I am able to meet your needs even when others let you down. Praise Me that I am able to transform their lives as well as yours. Just as My Son died for you, My child, He died for them. When you judge & condemn them, your attitude breaks My heart. I love the very ones you condemn. Praise Me for the good things I am teaching you through your most difficult relationships. Thank Me for the opportunity to offer grace to those who offend you & forgiveness to those who hurt you. You become more like Me every time you offer mercy instead of judgment. When you dare to praise Me for the difficult people in your life, I receive honor & glory, & you receive blessing. As you look into My face & worship Me, My love shines through you.”

Bible Verses: "Judge not, that ye be not judged."[Matthew 7:1]; "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."[Romans 8:28]; "For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive." [Matthew 6:14]

Today, praise God for the difficult people in your life & how He is using them to shape you. I know this will be hard, but if you will do this, the Holy Spirit will soften your heart & help you forgive these people. Forgiveness is not something natural. It is a supernatural work of the Spirit in our lives. Praise Him by faith that He will empower you to forgive.

“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” [1Peter 3:9]

Listen toLosing” performed by Tenth Avenue North & “Oh Great Merciful God” performed by Ben & Noelle. [ I couldn't find that link, so put the song sung by Hearts of Saints]

Pray: Lord Jesus, I thank You for the difficult people in my life. Thank You for ______________ [name specific people]. I praise You that although they irritate me, misunderstand me, or spread rumors about me, You are using them to refine my faith & to teach me about forgiveness. I know that as I thank You for them, You will set me free from judging them & will empower me to forgive them. Thank You that even when I feel angry with them, You empower me to refrain from pouring out my anger. God, it feels impossible to love those who have hurt me deeply, but I praise You that nothing is impossible with You. I praise You that as I struggle to love these people, You promise to be my refuge. If at any point I feel overwhelmed, I can hide in You.

Bible verses: "Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ."[1Peter 1:6-7] "Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil."[Psalm 37:8] "For with God nothing shall be impossible."[Luke 1:37] "But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works."[Psalm 73:28] "Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings."[Psalm 17:8]
